For as long as there's been a carry law, it still amazes me some cops don't know the basics about the law.

I went to WalMart today and walked right by a LEO as I was OCing. He never said a word, never stopped me, never a glance or second thought from what I noticed. I think had I been on North Minneapolis vs. Shakopee, things *MAY* have been different, but then again, maybe not. Fortunately I've never had any real issues OCing anywhere I've went.

I've open carried at walmart before. No problems. I've also open carried at the local china buffet while local pd was eating lunch. Got into a conversation with a police officer about carry. He did notice my Springfield xd 45 I was carrying atm and never asked for id or carry permit. Was kinda shocked that day...

Seriously, as tman pointed out, some officers may feel more comfortable conversing unarmed. (that's you unarmed, not them). There doesn't seem to be a nice, smooth process for this change in your armed-ness to happen. You can't just hand the pistol to the officer. I think I've read of some cases where the officer has asked the citizen to lay down on the ground, so they can restrain the citizen's hands, so that they can safely remove the pistol, so that they can converse with the citizen.

This is obviously sub-optimal if it's a wet day and you're on your way to meet the Bishop in your best sweater. It would be nice if some clever people could figure out a sensible protocol for this kind of situation, which gets everybody reasonably happy without too much drama.
