There have been attempts to go towards a cartridgeless platform, but that's as far as you can claim it's gone forward. We're still using gas and blow back operated auto's, and handgun design hasn't done much internally which isn't stolen from other older designs.

Looking at modern designs (striker fired), they're not really any different than any other linear spring operated action - which dates back to the 30's for the model 70.

I think whoever said black powder muzzle loaders would be the distinctive change was as close as one could get to defining the modern era.

Earlier this morning I watched Hickock45's video on the Boberg 9mm. This is a truly unique design, at least the most innovative design that I have seen in my short life. Video is here: http://youtu.be/ckyUmldwiDo

Only to a point.

We may have stalled in some areas, but we've made huge advancements in materials.

Striker fired what? Striker fired rifles have been around since the 1890's, if not earlier. The Ortgies pistol was designed in 1919.

That feeding system has been used in the Mars Automatic Pistol in 1897.

I was just using the 70 as an example, because I knew when it came out. It doesn't surprise me at all that they've been around another half century.

I saw this tread and decided that "traditional" meant wood and steel and "modern" meant polymers. plastics, and metals other than steel (aluminum for one).

The original intent was to see who prefers classic wood and blued steel, or modern polymers with the newest anodizing finishes. Somehow it's strayed into what defines a classic or modern gun as far as design goes. I know that the overall mechanics of guns hasn't changed much in the last 50 years, but the materials and finishes have made leaps and bounds.

ok

I like 20th century military firearms. I also like colts and Winchesters from the last quarter of the 19th century.
So I have some each plus a few clones of 1873 models.

I love my 1911s and my Sigs and my HK pistols..... too...
