Gun advise

I have a couple questions for everyone. I’m looking to purchase another gun and I was looking at a couple but wanted some thoughts.

First, I was at FF last night and saw a Arcus 98DAC, it is made in Bulgaria and is pretty much a Browning High Power clone. Seems as though it is a nice little gun, feels good in my hand, and is right in my price point. Does anyone have any experience with this gun? I also looked at the Taurus handguns they had but didn't really like any of them when I handled them.

Second, I was also looking at getting the Chiappa mFour-22. The only place that I’ve really found that has it is Palmetto State Armory, theirs is the Chiappa upper and a lower that I believe is different then what Chiappa lists on their site. Does anyone have any experience with this rifle? I already have a Mossberg 715T that was given to me for my 28th birthday but don't particularly like the guns construction (plastic shell with a 702 plinkster inside).

I’m just looking for some insight right now and opinions if anyone has any.

It sounds like the Arcus is ok, for what ya pay ... I'd also consider a Ruger P95 or a S&W SD!

I'd avoid anything which combines "Chiappa" and ".22" ... but that's based solely on a 1911-style I briefly handled a couple years ago!

Chiapp's 1911 style 22's used to blow up in your face, not sure if they still do. I've heard some good stuff about their uppers, a member on here as the upper only but I have no idea where I would find/build? a lower.

There is at least as much bad stuff reported about the chiappa uppers as good. One common issue I read about involves weak and easily bent or broken proprietary designed charging handles. A 50/50 chance at not having a problem is not worth the risk in my mind. Have heard the CMMG .22 upper is much better and worth the extra money over the chiappa. You get what you pay for in this area.

There are more lowers available now; especially polymer ones, so you have the option to build the lower if you find a good upper you can't pass by.

I picked up an Arcus a couple months ago. She's at about 900 rds now with no failures. Many guns feel better in the hand. Many guns cost more, too. For around $300 I figured it would be more of an experiment than anything else. Mags are available through Century (after you do their paperwork). It fits perfect in a holster I already had for a Daewoo 51 that I dumped a while back. Would I recommend the Arcus? Yup. But 900 rds doesn't prove much.

ETA: The DA trigger on the Arcus (if you de-cock it, or go 2nd strike on a failure) is among the worst I've felt. The SA trigger (and subsequent reset, if you're a guy who uses the reset) are not unlike any other handgun in the sub-$500 range.

I picked up a Chiappa .22 a couple of years ago. Pretty much junk and when I did use it , it would mess up a good day at the range. Gave it away and took the loss. I could not have looked myself in the mirror selling it to someone.

Thats good to know information. It'll pretty much be a range gun, I don't plan to carry and don't use for home defense, wife wont have it with our 4 year old son, her mom is pretty much anti gun too so that doesn't help any. But she's fine with me getting guns for the range so I don't care.

If it's just for the range, check out the slightly longer version. I don't know what they call it... Arcus DA? I suppose the "C" stands for compact. Anyway, they have one that's a bit longer and has a stainless slide. Hell, it would not be uncharacteristic of me to get that one too, next time I'm at FF.

You are correct, there is the 98DA and 98DAC for compact. I was at FF and didn't see the longer one, that would probably be the one I'd want anyways but yeah, didn't see it. The only thing I kinda like about the compact is that it fits Browning Hi Power mags, the DA does not.

I have another upper identical to the one I am selling on here. I have over 500 rounds through it and I have had zero problems with it. Heck, I still haven't cleaned it since I brought it home! I have also read a little bad on them. But remember gents, anything you read on the Internet is always true. Abe Lincoln even said it in another forum.

I'm torn between the two guns still, I'd really like a handgun but at the same time would like a rifle too, I'm going to look around at the local FF's hopefully tonight to see if anyone has the full size 98DA, If I could find the mFour locally I'd probably buy that in a heart beat, but putting together a lower myself sounds a little more trouble and money then I have right now.

I've got a 3in .45 Rock Island ... I've had to do quite a bit of work to it, to get it to run right ... but, I bought it several years ago ... and it sounds like the newer ones don't have the same issues?!

My brother owned one for quite a while. I wish I had the funds when he sold it on here just over a year ago. He loved it, just didn't need it. They are cool and shoot smooth. I'm not big on the billboard they roll onto the slide, however.
