Duracoat Project - Anyone want in?

Postby Tommyboyjfd on Mon May 06, 2013 2:11 pm

I am going to Duracoat my wife's PK380 slide. She thinks she want lime green... I know that I will have all sorts of left-over product and want to see if someone else wants anything duracoated. I have never used this product, so I would love to share this with someone who has the experience so I don't mess it up. I have a feeling I will get a little overzealous with the left-over product and knowing me I will end up with lime green duracoat on my rifles and shotguns.. :D

Also looking for advice to sway her from the lime green or experience with patterns. She has one of those "cricut" machines and I could probably have her print a few patterns for the guns.

Let me know if anyone wants to host a duracoat party some Saturday evening. I am in the Prior Lake area.

Make sure to dust it with white first. Then let it flash cure and paint the lime green.

The color will not pop without white.

Just my 2 cents. I was a certified finisher.

Any idea how much it will mute if I do not use white undercoat? I think the lime green is ghastly. :)

I didn't want to chance anything with my slide so I sent it to James to get coated. He does excellent work at reasonable prices. Just a thought if you decide to go the "pro" route. http://www.xdtalk.com/forums/xd-hs2000-com/

It will look darker thats about it. Are you blasting it first?

To do this right prepping is the key. White undercoat will make the green look like it does on lauer's site.

It is easy, but like everything painting is the easy part prep work is the hard part.

I have 5 years on some refinish jobs as daily carry guns and they still look great. Prep, prep and prep again.

Let me know if you have more questions.

I was not going to blast it. I was going to buy the duracoat kit that utilizes the 3m scotch pad. I figured I could also use a light grit paper if needed. I am open for suggestions and was really looking to do a group paint so that I have someone with experience helping out. I'll supply the paint. From my understanding, 4 oz should coat a few guns. I may do my G27 first as the guinea pig and utilize more military colors such as OD green or the coyote tan.

So here is my offer: I buy the duracoat kit that should coat 4 firearms. I am doing my Glock 27. You host and lend me your knowledge. Any other takers can supply beverages and food. :D I am in the Prior Lake area. I am available almost any Friday or Saturday night.

Glocks, the finish is rough enough to paint with out much prep work just a little light scuffing.

Clean them with Acetone or another high flash solvent. Paint thinner will leave a residue.

Do dust coats very light, it will run easily it works better if everything is warm.
1 oz will do a handgun slide maybe a frame. Depends how much you spray like in the cracks.

I would take you up on the offer but I am over an hour away and don't get down that way very often.
And I cannot spray for 5 weeks. I had Lasik so no dust in the eyes.

Use the extra paint to make your favorite rifle a zombie rifle. :o
