Has anyone had to wait for an FFL transfer?

so I bought I pistol out of state, and had it shipped up here to fishermans corner in Duluth. they said theyd call me when I could pick it up. shipped 2nd day air, checked the tracking number and it arrived last wedesday, morning. I worked so I got home and called em as I didn't hear from them all day while at work. I called and said I seen my pistol was there and asked if I could pick it up. the guy then asked if they called me. I said no but I see the pistol is there. he said that the manager has to go through the shipments and check whatever and that they would call me when it was ready for transfer... I was like ohhhhhhh kay??? its been a week today and have not heard a word. im gonna start getting on em if I don't get a call all day today. has anyone else had this happen? I mean I thought itd be as simple as lookin at the box, the serial number blah blah, I fill out the 4473 whiles hes doing that, call for the NICS check and done. so just wondering what yall think about this. should I raise hell? im kinda ticked, they are a smaller shop, and cant have that many pistols to go through.

... never had to wait, but I called and asked my local FFL what the process was so I knew what to expect before I had firearms shipped there for transfer. I've always been able to pick up the item the same day it arrived but different shops have different procedures / workloads / etc...

Rather than "raising hell" might I suggest simply calling and asking when the firearm you had shipped to them for a transfer and arrived 1 week ago would be ready to pick-up? Right now they are holding all of the cards, pissing on their faces with a nasty phone call seems unlikely to shorten your wait time - more likely the exact opposite.

More then 24 hours and I would have started calling the FFL and the shipper to find out what's up. A week is insane. Find another FFL next time.

yea I suppose, but I paid good money to have it shipped air, just to have them drag their feet and wait a week+ before doing a simple transfer? seems a little ridiculous. but ill call em and just ask

shipper did their job as it arrived on time, but the ffl is holding onto my gun. yea I wish I would have known how they operate. I mean they deal with a lot of firearms they have a good selection in the small store I figured theyd be on top of things. looks like I was wrong. ill bet they charge me 20 for the transfer too....

I'm a small time, home based dealer. When a gun comes in for me, I open the box, check to make sure it's unloaded, record the serial number, type, make, caliber etc... In my bound book, then it's ready to be picked up. There's not much time to get it ready for pick up. Less than 5 minutes. I pride myself in calling the customer as soon as humanly possible, and I actually don't want that gun hanging around my shop, plus I get paid sooner!

Now that being said... I know some dealers hate it when customers track their shipments and call as soon as they get an email tracking update or whatever. I've heard some dealers say your gun will be ready no longer than 2 days after its delivered, giving them 2 days to get to it. I know that for some busy shops, that is realistic and understandable.

But a week... Really...?

I have picked up two guns from FFL the day they arrived. There is no reason not to be able to pick them up they day they arrive. The paperwork does not take that long.

I can see if it's a very busy gun shop that has to deal with customers all day long. They may not even get their delivery until mid morning or afternoon, and they may get a bunch of guns on that shipment. Then if they close at 5 or whatever, I can easily see not being able to get it the day it arrives and I think a 2 day wait is understandable for very busy shops. Especially a multi product shop like this that sells guns and fishing items.

If its a home based dealer, keep in mind they have other time wasters (possibly called children) that can delay things too. They may have to run and get groceries, go to the bank, fix the leaky sink faucet, plunge the toilet, make dinner, fold the laundry, take the dog to the vet etc... And they may have shorter hours too.

In either case, I think a 2 day wait should be all that is ever needed from any dealer, even busy ones.

The dealer is probably shooting your or tinkering with it and making you wait because of it.

I say go into the store and get your firearm, there is no reason for a week wait unless you didn't have a PTP or PTC.

Fisherman's Corner has a sign on the back wall explaining that their receiving a firearm does not necessarily mean it is ready to pick up, it may take a few days for it to get processed. I have not had a gun shipped to them but when I was there last week it sounded like the owner or one of the owners may be on vacation.

Based on what was explained to me by another FFL holder, it may be that the person gone is the one holding the FFL, not the business. If so, then the gun can be received but not recorded so it is not available to be picked up by the buyer. One of the FFLs could expound or trounce this but it is what was explained to me upon ordering a handgun through another shop and it took longer than expected (their expectations, not mine).

In the future, try one of the pawn shops in Duluth, particularly the one used by Superior Shooter's Supply. A buddy bought a gun from SSS in the morning, charged him lunch at McDonald's for the three people at the shop for someone from SSS to deliver it, and he picked it up later that day. Normally, it it takes until the next day for them to process everything but he was at SSS first thing in the morning, the shop wasn't busy (it was a weekday morning), and the pawn shop wasn't busy either so a little kind talk got him same day service.
