22lr issues

Postby ASmith on Wed May 15, 2013 5:52 am

I've got a 10/22 and buckmark that are having issues with light strikes on the primers. Both are 10-15 years old with thousands of rounds trough them. Both are clean and well cared for. Do you think the springs are wore out? Or is there another issue?

Same problem with different brand ammo, or with the same ammo?

I'd start with a total disassemble and clean. Could be springs or the firing pin got shorter from use. Sometimes you can see the end of the firing pin "mushroomed" a little.

I've had stuff built up that prevented the firing pin from working properly.

With some rimfires, dry firing can damage the firing pin due to it hitting the breech face. Ruger says it's OK to dry fire a 10-22, but I've seen a mushroomed firing pin on that rifle before.

They both have been striped down and cleaned, so I don't believe they are dirty. I will take a look at the firing pins. I've tried a few brands of ammo to with the same results. Thanks for all the input, any other thoughts?

Yes check the firing pin/blade. Mine have done the same thing in the past. They needed a little tune up on them.

I can find dimensions for the firing pins but a couple phone calls may get you that. The Buckmark can suffer firing pin damage from dry firing, Ruger claims you can dry fire the 10/22 without damage to the firing pin. Hope all turns out well. Could be a weak spring, I just replaced one on an old .22 of mine.

Something has to be dragging on the firing pins or hammers. The fact that it's started to occur on two different guns is very odd, and would suggest more than anything that the problem is the ammo. Nonetheless, I'd pull the action out of the 1022 and check for any binding on the hammer and firing pin. Sounds like you already stripped the bolt, but do it again and check to make sure you put the spring back in properly under the firing pin. That spring only assists with firing pin return so it can't wear out and cause the problem you are having, but make sure it's not binding somehow and keeping the firing pin from moving forward when the hammer hits it.

Good luck,
Mark

My buck likes to loosen the 2 main top screws after a few hundred rounds and starts missing the rim just enough to not fire, I always have to remember to bring a wrench when I bring that out as I'm afraid of stripping them if I use loctite they are very soft metal. Check for excessive play in the slide and as stated earlier a mashed firing pin. Are you checking the brass to see where the firing pin is hitting and how hard? That would be the first thing to look at.

Echoing what's already been said, sounds like a disassembly might be required. If I were you, I'd buy new firing pins. Pretty cheap fix, really.

I'd replace them with Volquartsen firing pins. Not sure if they make them for Buckmarks, but the 10/22 for sure.

Remington .22s are notorious for firing problems. If this is what you are shooting, that is your problem.

If it's a pre-2003 Buckmark the entire guiderod/spring assembly is about $6.00 from Brownells. They recommend replacing it, every 5-6k rounds.

Brings back memories (as I've posted before) as that is the problem I had with the first .22 pistol I ever bought, a Buckmark. I loved the gun but it would light strike 2-3 out of every box of 50 (this was 15+ years ago though and when brand new). There was a mark on the case but it wouldn't fire. Yet, the same rounds fired fine when I ran them through my .22 rifle. I went through three different buckmarks that all did the same thing out of the box before I gave up and bought a Ruger Mark II. I was just afraid it was going to get worse over time and start doing it all the time. The Mark II was a great gun for thousands and thousands of rounds though.

Sounds like this thread is a great example of why a Ruger Mark is better than a Browning Buckmark.

Pretty sure they have their fair share of issues as well.
