Outdoor targets

Postby AR-15collector on Tue May 21, 2013 6:10 pm

So I have a big family field day planned for this weekend and normally I buy the .22 spinners etc, but someone always ends up landing a 5.56 on it and destroying it. We've put clays between boards on a pallet but there's no real feedback shooting them.

What other targets do the outdoor shooters use and is there a right wrong kind of ammo to use (I.e. FMJ on a steel plate target) I'm thinking the rubber stars or boxes, maybe a bowling pin or two.... Recommendations?

I want to do a big block of ice too.

Could be fun for kids with 22lr.

I bought a couple of the orange plastic boxes and pyramids from Mills Fleet Farm for the grandkids to shoot. About $15 each. They are fine for rifles or handguns. The grandkids us 22's. These can be shot at most any distance and be safe. I also have the grandkids shoot crackers or charcoal briquettes.

With steel you must be very careful of the distance to the target. 22's and handguns 10 yards a minimum. Rifles must be at 100 yards or more to prevent potential bullet splatter injuries.
Because I care, I carry.

Of course Tannerite. Golf balls for a good challenge. Charcoal.

Oh, don't forget shaving cream cans. They have a tendency to get airborne. Dollar store cans or produce are foolproof.

Expired jugs of milk and beer cans refilled with water. Those were favorite targets when we were kids. Exploding water is always spectacular.

Depending on where you're shooting, you should consider the clean up afterwards. Paint balls would be rather hard to clean up. Food items are usually good...you can pick up the big pieces and the critters will scavenge the little pieces. I've always liked the beer/soda/cans/bottles filled with water! Now Jello is something different...lol.

Paintballs hard to clean up? :rotf:

They are water soluble. It rains and they are gone. All that is left is the golf T's, and being wood they will break down as well.

Paintballs will stain - but on a gun range who cares?

I joke with kiddo about shooting his toys at 100yds. The looks he gives me are worth it - he knows I can hit them.

ShootSteel.com gets another vote from me if using hard targets. Pop cans are a crowd pleaser as are fruits (talk to the produce people and see if you can get spoilage). I've thought a strawberry on a string would be fun at 200yds.

I think fruit, cans and shaving cream take the wins. Might throw a spray paint can or two in there for its and gigs
