Join a private gun club.

The most dangerous places to shoot...1 = Worst and 6 = Best

1) Public Lands
2) Public Ranges which rent guns (due to the rent-a-boomstick crowd)
3) Public Ranges that don't rent guns
4) Gun clubs that allow the public to access them.
5) Gun clubs that are members only.
6) Your own private land with STFO signs on it and a big arse fence all of which is properly zoned and away from the populace at large.

I use 5 mainly, sometimes 3, and am working on 6.

YMMV.

Clay birds side of the Forest Lake club is open to the public. The pistol league which runs on Thursdays is also open to the public. Rifle shooting is for members only but will be open to the public during Sight in Days which runs from September until the start of deer season.

There are still openings for memberships.

Can members bring a guest to the range to shoot?

Shareholders can bring one guest, and the cost is nothing.

Don't listen to that $5.00 thing. :)

I shoot on public land all the time. I don't feel unsafe at all, especially since there's usually no one around for miles.

For the OP, it's going to be a difficult task to get people to divulge their secret shooting spots south of the cities, since then there's one more person who knows, who tells another person... etc.

Generally, the idea is to keep public spots a secret so there's no one there when you show up.

If you can get someone to tell you, instead of the usual "just join a club" response, congrats. Then tell me. :D

Ha, yes that would make sense. I have always felt the same way about the public spots that I have found, but it seems everyone else disagrees. I will be sure to keep that in mind :D I appreciate the response.

I would add a "3b" to that list of places...

3b. Gun clubs that will serve alcohol to members BEFORE they start shooting.

I don't care if someone wants a drink after they are done shooting, but drinking before shooting tends to scare me away.

I didn't want to say this, but it's true. I have a membership to Faribault, can shoot on my own land (10 acres) and know a couple public places that allow shooting.
I got nothin'

I know you said close but it's the cities, you won't find any that will confine you to a spot.

Go to Wisconsin....I buddy of mine and his brother bought membership from an owner where they can shoot, run and gun and setup targets to do some real practice. I don't remember the name of it off the top of my head but it's one group per outting. If someone is there you are SOL until they are done etc....It's like $300 per yr, but split up the bill and it's fairly cheap.

I can check with him to see if he remembers. His brother owns the membership not him.

That actually sounds really awesome, and just what I was looking for. I will have to try to find one of these for myself. The Pine City spot is pretty nice, just so far away. Maybe there are a few of these in Minnesota...

I want to shoot phone books and 2x4's just to see what the bullets I shoot can really do.
