To the question of worrying about losing a $3K gun in a shooting, that is the LEAST of your problems, and you're probably looking at high 4 or low 5 figures for the defense unless you blow away a perp that's trying to kill a cop and it's caught on videotape. In that case, you walk, but in general pulling the trigger in real life is very, very expensive.
To that end, the question that I posed to myself was what gun would I like to own which also might minimize the chance of a perp actually throwing down and going for it, and which would also maximize my chance for survival?? I was carrying an EAA 10mm, which had 14+1 capacity, and is a very potent gun in its own right, but there are two things lacking. One is that you can't buy Crimson Trace lasergips for it, and who out there can tell the difference between a 9mm and a 10mm or 40, or even 45 from a quick glance at the muzzle? Certainly not your average street perp isn't going to know a 9mil from a Fotay, or really care while he's busy holding his gat sideways an all...
Given that, plus my penchant for exotic calibers, I decided that the 50GI was what I wanted, and if it would de-escalate one confrontation, it was essentially free to buy it. The look down the barrel is literally to die for, plus in the dark that little red dot is VERY intimidating, because wherever the dot is, that's where the bullet's going to wind up. Gun lasers were proven to be very effective in supermax prison riots years ago, and once even the most hardened inmate got that red dot on his body, he generally threw down his shank and quietly walked towards the security people and his cell.
And finally, the 50GI is on the top end of the lethality scale, without being something ridiculous like a .454 mountain gun, where you really have to worry about over penetration and muzzle blast indoors. The 50GI puts a 300 grain God Dot out the pipe at 880 FPS, nd while the ft-lbs are not spectacular, the Taylor knock-out factor which takes into account bullet diameter IS up there. TKO of 17.4 or so, which is the same a full house 44 mag 240 grain JHP hunting round.
Having said all that, this is what you're literally looking at if push comes to shove, and in my opinion if you still want to dance, there there's nothing else one could say or do or carry to stop that outcome, but this view could make a lot of people think twice!!
