I've spoken with the local CO in the past and asked her about legally doing so - she said the same thing...its State Forest land -- or possibly tax-forfeit - either way, she wasn't concerned. She did admonish us all to pick up spent brass and targets when shooting on public land.

This is the same place where I hauled out couches and old TV's that someone had been using for target practice

Would this place be on The Old Grade off Hwy 1 north of the Whitefish Chain? Been shooting there for decades. And picking up people's trash :o

Nope. That would have been quite difficult. We picked up the few pieces we found, along with all our shells and all the stuff we brought in. We also picked up a bunch of paper targets, water bottles, and even a few beer cans (scary) some other people left behind. We always make a "best effort" to leave the place better than when we came. Bugs me to see other people litter like that, if it gets bad enough I would guess they will start shutting that down.

That's the place. Garbage was better this spring...only one old TV this time, and no furniture. Although someone looked to have been shooting a bunch of beer bottles recently. Broken glass everywhere.
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

That is a very Cool place. Too bad so far from cities. They logged in there last couple years. Some the nicest trees I'd ever seen. We hunt deer north of there to the cross roads go left a ways then. Big woods with swamps and thickets and beaver dams. Best time of the year. That pit has a super hill to shoot into. We park the on one end and shoot out the box of the pickup using the cab as our bench.

The DNR never seemed to have a problem with us shooting there.

is there a designated shooting area in Rum River or did you just find a clearing or something?

I live right on the border of Carver and Hennepin county. Does anybody know of some good places to shoot nearby?

Burnsville and South Metro are the closest ranges, but it's about $15 a session. It gets expensive going so often.

I'm interested about rum river as well, seems to be the closest public land to the twin cities.

I'm itching to shoot a wet phone book or a stack of 2x4s just to witness the relative energy of different calibers / cartridges.

Anyone Ever done any of that? Youtube is full of that but it's once removed.

Wet phone books are fun for recovery of expanded hollow-points.

I like that blue one. What round is that? Do they come in different colors on the inside?

Federal Guard Dog EFMJ in .45, I believe they only come in blue.

Hmm... I hope they come in 9mm too. I use Cor-bon in my G19, and believe it or not, it actually has caused a misfeed. I'm assuming it's the ammo, but that should NEVER happen to a Glock. Even if I stuck a .40 in there, I expect it to fire it flawlessly.

Nice mushrooming on the Speer Gold Dot. I'm actually saving up a few phone books in case the opportunity presents itself. I don't suppose there might be an evening during the Bursnville Winter pistol league that could be 'Phone book night' where that particular itch could be scratched in a regulated semi-scientific manner....winters do get long. But considering that the place just burned to the ground, I'm not getting my hopes up :)
