My personal opinion on the most important prep for someone who's gonna carry a gun? Find out how you deal with intense stress (human interaction) and seek to improve it. While I've never been in LE or .mil, I had a job for 13 years that involved very frequent, often physical stressful human interaction. There's a HUGE spectrum of how folks react to even minor violence.

That makes sense. However, I do keep "An eye out" for people's right to carry. I just wish people in general (Not directed at you) would do more to get training beyond their PTC class. Not because I instruct, but because it's the smart and responsible thing to do. I don't care who they train with, jut go out and get some. Besides....it's fun :D

Summary:

1. Don’t be a dick
2. Have a goal beyond “just open carrying”
3. Don’t go looking for trouble
4. Dress like a grown-up
5. Get some gun retention training
6. Use a retention holster
7. Don’t proselytize people.
8. Just go about your business
9. Be polite to the police
10. Don’t be a dick

Being a dick has its place. Just don't start out that way.

With regard to the training part of this discussion, all civilian PTC holders should get solid training beyond the woefully inadequate six or so hours every five years required. If you are not getting additional professional training at a minimum annually, IMHO you are negligent and should not be carring a gun in public (I am not in any way associated with any training group).

With regard to open carry, again IMHO, anyone that carries open in public is an idiot and doing so only helps the anti-gun establishment. There is no tactical advantage for a civilian to carry open (only disadvantage) and anyone that does so is just trying to fulfill some ridiculous “cop want-to-be fantasy” (I am also not a cop).

I personally don't feel that anyone should have to have training to carry a firearm as a civilian.

Is it smart? yes.

Should it be in the law? no.

I highly doubt that there is any statistical difference between states that have a training requirement and states that don't.

I've actually looked and I can't find anything statistically significant...

If someone else can I'd love to see it!

if I ever do a PhD in Criminal Justice, this would make a great dissertation topic. Unfortunately, I'll probably go a different direction :P

The tactical advantage for a civilian is the same as it is for the military or police that open carry.

There are states that allow people to open carry without a permit to carry. Those states believe that one should be able to pull a trigger and defend themselves without intervention or certification from the Overseers. Idiots and wannabe cops.

Congrats on your ongoing training. I hope you are keeping an open mind in your annual training.

Fixed it for you.
Everything after that sentence is superfluous.
