A modest proposal

Postby raggers on Sat Oct 26, 2013 1:05 pm

The public would be well served if we of the shooting community were to take the simple step of providing marksmanship training for gang members. Many innocent lives could be saved.

One merely has to glance at the newspapers or television to see that innocent bystanders, even children, are periodically shot in what so often turns out to be gang-related shootings. Two children have been killed in just the past few years, along with others, apparently solely because their killers could not grasp the most fundamental principle of hitting what they were aiming at. Think how much good could be done, and how much grief could be avoided, if only the shooters were accurate.

I call upon all right-thinking shooters in Minnesota to open their hearts and take local thugs to our ranges, where they can practice shooting at paper targets that realistically represent members of opposing gangs. Just think: In as a little as one day, and with the expenditure of just a moderate amount of ammunition, a wild-shooting young gangsta could be turned into a credit to his community.

(I posted this same thing on the other Minnesota gunnie forum.)

Maybe we should furnish them with bigger guns so they kill instead of wound each other.

This. I think the bangers shoot better then a lot of the police. The shots fired to hit ratio is pretty bad. Maybe get them together. Sing kumbaya and stuff.

While I am not a LEO, let's admit they have a lot of laws, rules, department regs and procedures to follow. The gang bangers, not so much. Action always beats reaction, police are generally reacting.

That said do most police care about their weapons or practice and gain superior marksmanship skills, generally not.

FBI has a white paper out on that fact.....
https://www.ncjrs.gov/App/Publications/ ... ?ID=253329

Findings from this study reveal that felonious assaults on officers are the result of a discrepancy that exists between how officers and offenders perceive the same situation. After examining incidents of felonious assault on police officers, the authors found that when encounters between officers and offenders (known or suspected) turned violent, the balance of power often shifted in favor of the offender, thereby changing the interpersonal dynamic between the two parties. In these situations, self-awareness by either party became critical to their survival. Data for the study came from information on approximately 800 incidents of felonious assaults against officers; 40 of the incidents are examined in detail in the study. In-depth interviews with the victim officers and the offenders and visits to the crime scenes provided additional information for the study. This study is presented in nine chapters in this report: Chapters 1-3 present information on the offense incidents, the officers, and the offenders; Chapter 4 presents an in-depth analysis of weapons-related issues; Chapter 5 examines the role of perception in the violent encounter; Chapter 6 explores the role of suicide by cop; Chapter 7 looks at the training issues involved in these incidents; Chapter 8 presents case summaries of some of the 40 incidents included in this study; and Chapter 9 describes the concept of deadly mix and how it is involved in felonious assault incidents with police officers. The methodology and participation protocols for the study are presented in two appendixes. Tables, figures, and bibliography
