Emergency gun loan, looking for stories

Postby photogpat on Wed Dec 04, 2013 8:47 am

I'm looking for examples of folks who've loaned a firearm to a friend, family member, neighbor, etc during a time of emergency, such as in the aftermath of a tornado or windstorm.

If you don't want to post it here, send me a PM. I don't need names, just examples.

Thanks!
Pat

Closest I got is loaning my DE50 to a 30+ year friend to go fishing in Alaska. He had been carrying a 44 mag in a Pelican case, and had a big Kodiak charge his boat and then veer off while he was dicking around trying to open the case, and wasn't all that thrilled when I told him that anything less than a perfect shot with a 44 would just piss off a bear that size. He since has bought his own Smith 500 when they came out, so he doesn't need to borrow my stuff anymore. Probably a little off the mark for what you are thinking of.

I have been getting threats from pieces of paper lately...can I borrow it with some ammo please? :D

To the topic...I'm not sure I would even consider this. Anyone I know that I would trust with a gun already has one. Except...after typing that, my dad only has a 22 rifle these days...I would loan him one in a heartbeat.

If someone needs a gun that bad, they can go buy their own.

Yep, because someone who'se house, personal possessions, and permit to purchase were just destroyed/ scattered around the county should have no problem securing the needed funds (on top of everything else that's draining their credit card at the moment) and convincing a gun shop to ignore the law.

If I had a friend or family member that was already a legal and responsible gun owner and that person had just lost their home/property to a disaster of any sort. I would have absolutely no issue with loaning them a firearm......I would even deliver at a speed that put Jimmy Johns to shame.

When Vvrroomm's fancy 1911 fell apart shooting IDPA one evening. He barrowed my GLOCK to shoot the match. Does that count?

And if it is a young lady that has just separated from her abusive ex and barely has the funds to feed herself and child let alone keep a roof over their head, then how do they afford a needed firearm. Yes I have loaned a firearm and supplied ammo to an individual that wanted to try a firearm out for an extended period of time until she could afford an inexpensive firearm and ammo that was adequate for her particular needs. 8-)

Lt Col Dave Grossman and two FrontSight instructors were coming to town and wanted to travel light. We loaned all three of them guns that matched their personal carry pieces.
1 x 1911 for Dave
1 x Glock 19 for Jeff
1 x XDm for Roland.

The Mrs. and I considered it for a friend that was going through a rough spot while exiting a relationship. We decided that a better idea for that situation would be to offer the friend a place to stay until things settled down.

I have borrowed plenty of guns (and ammo) for hunting to people who I knew well enough to not be concerned about being in violation of the law.

I have borrowed guns for competitions.

I can't say that I have ever lent a gun for "personal protection" use. I would have a real concern in two ways with that, first, it isn't their gun- will they be able to use it right in a time of stress. Secondly, in the example given, the odds are they would be trying to protect property; while my feelings personally are that is OK, I know it is not OK by the state of Minnesota- I would not want to put my arse in that particular crack.

I've had a few PM responses that were good to get.

I should point out I'm not looking for a debate on the ethics of loaning a firearm to someone. We can do that on another thread. Just interested in getting stories of an "e!regency"-type loan. As xD Ed pointed out, there's little chance at securing money, PTP/PTC, etc when the power's out and you have a tree in your living room.

I just loaned a friend and forum member that is ill, my Mossberg 500 Tactical, to assure that he and his wife are safe. I even provided the "Self Defense 12ga ammo. I sleep better knowing they are SAFE!
