Well since he's only 4 I won't allow him to handle a gun yet and I don't think he'd have much fun going with anyways yet. When he's older though I hope he's interested in shooting with his dad.

FWIW I shot my first gun, a .22 lr when I turned 4. I am happy to report that I have shot guns for more than 51 yrs. I fired my first Shotgun at 6 yrs of age, with my dad placing his hand behind my shoulder for support. It was a 16ga at a Turkey Shoot, and I won my mom a fresh turkey.

That is one of the BEST memories of my dad, still today. I had my oldest son shoot his first time at age 6 and he is an avid hunter and now owns his own security company. He tells me that that first shooting experience, is his favorite memory as well .

Yeah, I get what you're saying, the wife would have something different to say about it though, and I don't really think he's ready yet, I feel he should be a little bit older and understand a little bit more before I let him shoot anything.

My son shot his first striped gopher at age 5 off a Rem700Clasic in 6mmRem using a reduced handload and 55 grain bullet.
Rifle was on a Harris BiPod and used as single-shot only. I was directly behind/over him as he shot. Gopher about 100 yards out in pasture.

I think us, and our kids, matured a little earlier back all those years ago. The digital age, has sure changed how kids grow up. You and I probably spent more outdoor time (out of sight of mom and dad) by the time we were 7 or 8, than most kids of today see by the time they're 18. Mom would always say "go out and play" whenever she wanted us out from under her feet. We had Cap Guns and Pop Guns (remember those ) and Slingshots, and even BB/Pellet guns that we used with ZERO Adult supervision (after we got the low down and safety instructions) for days on end.

I'm afraid that is an era, LONG GONE I told my wife that todays kids grow up to what we used to call "Citified" and don't "go out and play" like we did.

Don't remember when i shot my first gun but it was around 6-7 but we had my grandparents place at a "dude ranch" in CO that grandpa hunted at with all his old time friends who started up the place. Shot a 22, but I will never forget shooting the big 44 mag that was almost bigger than I was. If I had a similar calm outdoor private locale I might give it a try, but don't trust my slightly hyper and distractable gun-curious 4 1/2 y/o boy at a public range (even if it was allowed, most don't) and my 10 y/o daughter is just a little too skittish still about our guns so it's the same deal, don't want her to have a scary experience for any reason. Some inlaws of mine have a shooting party once a year and might try it then after everyone else is done and it is a little more quiet and they can try the 10/22 on some bags and if that goes well maybe the sr-22 without distractions. At that point if they wanted I would consider a kids rifle, but don't want one in the safe being sadly unused. Until then, I'll just keep teaching them about safety, and have let them hold some unloaded rifles and practice trying to line up sights and training their muscle memory to keep fingers off triggers. It'll come in time and no reason to rush or push them at the moment. Let me tell you, I wish I had some place like that old ranch where us cousins ran out the door each morning with our slingshots and bikes and only instructions to be back for lunch and then just be home before dark if we didnt want to fish w/ grandpa at dusk. Too bad grandpa went first and grandma sold the place at her first opportunity. Sending the kids outside w/ our 1/2 acre lot isn't quite the same deal.

Oh, and Oldman you guys are great for making this offer and I hope you get some takers. For my purposes, I still have plenty of 22LR at the moment myself.
