My former employer of 12.5 years issued a new policy immediately after passage of the MCPPA that forbade employees from carrying a firearm anywhere in the course or scope of employment. For purposes of my work in the office I abided by that rule for the most part. There were some exceptions where certain things had happened/were happening that made me uneasy and I carried deeply concealed a handful of times.
When I traveled for work, however, was a much different story. I frequently spent up to 2 weeks out by myself, and drove 1-2k miles in that period of time in addition to the specific work I was doing. With rare exception I would bring a handgun with me and carry it concealed (or openly in the company vehicle while driving long distances) in the places I was able to do so. Even in the places I couldn't carry in public, at least I was able to have something for protection in my hotel room.
As I was usually flying to begin and end my trips this made for some interesting flight check-ins at various airports, like the time a Northwest agent in Sacramento called airport police and the TSA when I told her I needed to check a bag with a firearm. She was positive that it was "illegal to have a handgun in California" <facepalm>. The TSA folks were pretty good about things with a few exceptions. The only places trips I wouldn't bring one were if I was going to be spending any time in DC, NYC, or Chicago. I had no interest in getting a felony sheet for mere possession, even if those were the places I figured I'd be most likely to need it.
Anywho, bottom line: What my employer never found out never hurt them or me. As someone mentioned previously, if I ever had to used it, I figured looking for a new job would be OK since I would be alive to actually do so.
