Restore a old Stevens 22 or sell ?

Postby not2worried on Tue Mar 25, 2014 11:03 am

I have a old Stevens 22, model 52-B that I'm trying to decide if I should try to restore it or just find a better home for it.
Gave to me from my grandfather about 20 years ago,

Wonder what people thoughts are..
If I restore best way?

Never sell an heirloom.

I'm not very familiar with restoring, but I did strip & re-blue an old single-shot 20ga and re-did the wood back in 8th grade. It turned out great. If this piece has no historical value then find some way to restore it. It is certainly possible and will make it look great.

Send the metal parts out to be re-blued. And while that is being done, refinish the stock.

not like your going to pay off the mortgage with the proceeds from it, keep it. unless you didn't like your grandpa.

is it missing a trigger guard? you can probably find a replacement at numrich.

Keep it, refinish it, shoot it and enjoy it.

+1 on keeping it. For what you'd sell it for, you'll regret it for the rest of your life.

That's a pretty small restoration job, I would keep it.

Looks pretty nice ^^^!

I would prefer to keep it. I know that the sell value is next to nothing. Any recommendations on places that do Bluing?
Stock I could do myself.

And a trigger guard is high on the list of items I need to find.

Go here to start your search for the trigger guard;
http://www.gunpartscorp.com
or call Ahlmans in Morristown, MN they might have it also.
I am in the process of refinishing my Grandpa's old .22 also. It is a project of love, not a money maker!
Lets see some pics when it is done.

You should keep it even if you don't restore it but how fun that could be as a shooter if you did fix it up! I recall seeing an old beat up 870 in the used rack at GM in Rochester a couple years ago and on the butt stock was engraved something like "To Billy from Grandpa" and I couldn't understand how someone could let go of something that special, especially for the pennies that GM would have given in trade. I thought how sad that the person had such little respect for their Grandpa that even if they didn't want it that they couldn't give it to another member of the family.

here's is a picture of one I redid with the kid a while back.. picked up a bunch of 22's from a guy and the kid liked this wards westernfield so we spent the winter cleaning it up. we used brownells ovencure on it (it's been holding up really good), turned out pretty good and we had a ton of fun doing it.

I would leave it exactly as it is now. It's only original once. Keep it oiled and protected from rust and enjoy it in it's original state.

I agree. whats wrong with it anyhow? get the trigger guard but why reblue or whatever, just try to get the new part to match. maybe oil the wood but don't really try to change too much?
