A Dunlop dilemma

Postby lizard55033 on Mon Apr 21, 2014 7:54 pm

For all you bigger guys out there for which your belly "dunlops" over your belt... :D

Do you prefer IWB or OWB for your carry piece? If you prefer IWB do you prefer a slimmer single stack type pistol; or a double stack such as M&P or Glock?

IWB, keeps it in more. I carried a 1911 for a long while, but the grip stuck out too much. I moved on to a 1½ stack HK45C, same capacity, much shorter, not much wider.

I tried carrying in a hybrid type holster but the leather sweat guard kept folding over (it'd do it to a skinny person too, my gut just made it worse). I now carry it in a RCS Phantom with metal belt clips from the hybrid.

Not the option you listed but for me it is a Kahr PM9 in a pocket holster in the front pocket. IWB no matter where I carry will still print or be in a position that isn't comfortable to carry or draw.

Not "Dunlop" but DunLap" or "DoneLapped".

I carry in 4 o'clock position OWB with a light jacket.
In hot weather, I switch to a pocket pistol or both, with OWB then being OC, which is not preferred for multiple reasons.

SKINNY guys use smaller guns so their pants don't fall down. :D

S&W Shield in an Alien Gear hybrid IWB at the 4 o'clock position. Prior to getting the Shield, I carried a Sig P239 in an SGH double snap IWB.

Not this skinny guy. I carry a bigger piece. No small girly guns for me!

Different gun in rotation from Kimber Custom 45 (officer lower with 4 inch upper basically) to SAR 45 double stack with Several double stack 9mm CZ and CZ clones in between - all IWB.

HBE and Jeramiah metal clips for holsters not that that matters as we also have good holster mfgs on the forum. Like the easy on and off of metal clips vs loops or snaps.

At 6' 3" and 240 pounds plus being older than dirt, I do have a bit of a bulge in the front, and a little on the side. I carry a full sized 1911 (Guncrafters 50GI no less...) in an IWB holster at 3 o'clock, and my pants are more snug than roomy, especially in the waistband area. Use a Spec Ops 1 3/4" BDU belt, and the net effect is that approximately HALF the thickness of the grip is pressed into my elderly pudge, and even a full sized artillery piece like mine is invisible under a T-shirt. Went to a Black's Leather sales when they used to have those at the fairgrounds, it was posted, I didn't give a Rodentman's buttock about that, and with just an untucked turtle neck on and nothing else walked between a St. Paul cop and a rentacop that were 5' apart and checking me over, and they totally missed it. So did my daughter, and we were trying on coats for an hour, and she freaked when she found out in the car afterwards that I had it on me the whole time. Got a really nice aviator's leather jacket for like 18 cents on the dollar.

I am 6 foot and about 240. I can cary my xd sub compact with a hybrid IWB. But my preferred daily carry is a Springfield EMP in a custom leather IWB.
