458 SOCOM?

Anyone own one? what do you think of it. I threw a low ball bid in on an upper on GB the other day and wound up with it. Looks like I have to build another gun... Looks like it might be kinda fun. I take A liking to odd ball calibers. Sourcing handloading supplies doesnt look too bad. I will be into the complete rifle for under $800. With Rock River upper, and PSA lower, and Magpul furniture, I dont think thats too bad. Opinions? Good / bad / or otherwise?

I'm debating between a 458 socom rifle and a 300 blackout pistol for the next gun. Interested to hear thoughts on it

I debated for a while between .458 Socom and the .450 Bushmaster. I ultimately chose the .450, only because I already handloaded .454 Casull and would have the ability to use the same bullets in both calibers. They both are pretty neat cartridges. As you stated you were looking at reloading supplies for it as this really is the only way to own one of these big bore ARs, unless you are rich and can justify spending 2-3 dollars a round. If you use the lighter 250gr bullets it will shoot really flat out to about 200yds. With the .458 you have the ability to load up some really heavy bullets 500+ grains, where as the .450 is limited to 405gr. If you are into that kind of thing. Overall I think you will be happy with it. Mine is a lot of fun.

The 300blk pistol was last winter's build. I like that one too. Still perfecting the perfect handload, but I plan on deer hunting with it in the fall.
I am interested in loading up some 500gr hog rounds. I load for my 460 S&W, kind of a bummer that these are .458, but I can work with it.

How do you like the 50ae Sam? That would be another kickass rifle. I have a desert eagle 50, so I'd be set up for that. What kind of range do you get out of that pig?

It is indeed a kick-ass gun, and has a 2" integral brake drilled into the end of a 1" diameter stainless barrel that's 20" long. And no, it's not a bull barrel at that diameter - wall thicknesses are only 1/4", and the other half inch is this 50 caliber gaping black hole. It's a bit milder than shooting a 12 gauge, and it's ungodly accurate to the point of 3 shot holes at 100 yards. MV for the Speer 325 gr. HP is 1800 FPS, and that's the exact same load you shoot in a DE. Dunno about long range performance at all - that cartridge isn't built for that.

Forget about it. Tony Rumore did the work, and he's a very gifted if somewhat off the reservation gunsmith, and some of those parts he hand made. The bolt is turned out to take the 50 AE rim, and the extractor is built up from scratch. This is FAAAAR away from a kit gun. Mags are all shortened with spacers for the shorter round. Best you could do is start out with a 450 Bushmaster upper and get a new barrel, and that wouldn't be cheap.

BTW Stay away from the 50 Beoowulf. It's a fustercluck 3 ways from Sunday, with its 50 caliber case and its little 7.62x39 case head. Made by a pair of idiots who later got in a legal pissing match, the gun was designed for the Coast Guard, and early on they had full on case head COLLAPSES INTO THE CASE plus bolts blowing out.

Much later Bell Extrusion Labs who made the cases had to drag this pair into court to prove they falthfully followed the prints they were given, and all this mess wasn't their fault.
