New tools...

Postby Rodentman on Fri Jun 27, 2014 6:32 pm

I got tired of using dental picks. They worked OK but they had picks on both ends and I kept digging the unused end into my hand. So I got there. Should help with changing the mag release on Glocks.

I thought that Glocks never needed maintenance, oiling, or anything to keep it shooting. Now I see that metal tools are used to keep them shooting???? :lalala:

I've found varying levels of hardness on pick sets. My snap-on set was $14 in 1992 and I still have 3 of the 4 in their original shapes (the L one broke trying to coerce a C clip). The cheap set I got at menards might as well be made of playdough - too soft to be useful.

Dental picks are always hard and made of at least a reasonably tough alloy. That is, if you buy real dental picks. There's a lot of junk out there that's the right shape and size, but as real as Pam Anderson's chest.

This is what I use to unhook the wire spring from my Glock's magazine release:

The cutout on the curved "blade" is perfectly sized to grasp the wire spring:

And I'm sorry, but I'm having trouble visualizing how Pam Anderson's chest is used as a tool for detail-stripping firearms...

I tried looking for "WIHA 26811" on Amazon; this is the closest I could find: WIHA 26810.

Dimensionally, apart from some additional knurling at the base of the handle, the 26810 looks identical to my 26811 (blade tip 1 x 3.5 mm, overall length 5.7"), so I do not know what the functional differences are. Size of the slot on the blade tip, perhaps?

Edited to add: Just noticed that one of the reviewers for the item indicated he was using it to install small springs in firearms!

It's not, it was used as an example of fakes. ;)

If anyone is looking for dental picks, call up or stop by one of the Ax Man surplus stores. They usually have then and I have purchased them individually for around $2.50 or $3.00. They are usually under glass in the display cases at the checkout counter. So go ahead and ask and the clerk should bring out the container(s) they are in to let you pick through them (no pun intended).

Do you dull the dental picks a bit before using them? At one point somebody recommended for me to stay away from them as they would leave scratches. That was just for cleaning purposes though.
Did you just buy that beautiful firearm, or are you trying to sell that piece of crap?
