We've All Done It

If you been into guns for awhile you've done it at least once. Sold something off that in retrospect you shouldn't have. Hopefully you're done kicking yourself. Here's my list:

Colt Python. Sold it because I was convinced I needed something stainless steel that could handle stout loads. Today the Python prices are far outpaced what I got in its place.
Weatherby Orion O/U. I really needed the money and I felt that it was the one I could part with.
Remington 1100 Magnum. Same reason as the Weatherby. Actually, I miss this gun a little more than the Weatherby.
Browning Citori Superlight 12-gauge. The story is too long to share, but let's just say I was pressured into buying a smaller bore O/U by the crowd I was running with at the time. Additionally stupid because it was a gift.
Ruger Security Six. No good reason why I sold it. Probably just didn't have a reason to keep it.
Ruger Speed Six. Again no good reason why I sold it, but seeing what they're going for now, proved it was a mistake.

So, anybody willing to admit they've done it as well?

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Have 1 that I've thought about, but just can't bring myself to do it.

I have sold a few Sigg Sauers, 2 Glocks, 2 Ruger revolvers and a Beretta shotgun and don't regret it. Let's face it, this stuff is production and easily replaceable. If it makes you feel any better, a S&W 686 shoots as well as a Colt Python. So don't feel bad about selling it. Do you want a gun that shoots well or do you want a Colt?

I have a few guns that I would be hesitant to sell but everything I own is for sale if the price is right.

My only regret is that my 18" Match SS AR upper is gone. But The upper I received in trade was one I had wanted for a long time. The silver lining is the excuse to build another precisionish AR.. Made the deal today for a bare 16" stainless upper. And I have enough spares in house to complete it.

The decision to sell all my collectible guns, keeping only those I will actually shoot, caused relief not regret. More room and funds to spend on quality optics.

Okay, maybe the Colt SP-1 loss is still a bit painful. Okay, downright dumb to dump as it was fun to shoot as well as fondle.

I'd have bought that Speed Six! (OK, actually I'd probably have been broke that month and just wished I could by it.)

I sold off both my 1911s and I miss them. I decided a manual safety on a defensive gun wasn't for me, and I should I should train with what I might fight with, and my recreational shooting is the only training I actually do. So in my head it still makes sense, but in my heart I miss shooting the weapon of Alvin York, and I miss that awesome single-action trigger.

No regrets yet, the one minor oops was a Taurus TCP which was cheap enough to just buy again.

You must be significantly more selective than me at choosing firearms to buy or have one massive safe. I've traded and sold as many or more than I own. I like to try new things, but if it isn't a good match, it's gone.

A couple that come to mind are:

Browning Citori XS in 28 ga with 30" barrels- sold when short of funds

Browning Citori Featherlight in 12 ga with 28" barrels- same reason as above

S&W 1000 Super in 12 ga- wanted an 11/87 big mistake

All the Winchester SX-1 guns I've owned- someone always wanted them more than me

Browning A-Bolt in 270 Win ( gave it to my stepson as a present but it did have nice looking wood)

Remington 700 in 375 H&H - extremely accurate but I fell into the Rem extractor trap

Springfield Ultra Carry in 45 ACP- awesomely accurate but heavy for a carry gun

S&W 41- sold when short of funds

Winchester 1876 in 45/60- sold to a collector as i didn't think I would not shoot it again.

H&K USC. Had to get rid of it when I moved to CA. That thing was fun to shoot and accurate and has only appreciated in value.

Also had to sell an AR and CETME at the same time. Ended up getting another CETME when I got back, then realized what a POC it was. I had definitely built it up in my mind, but experiencing higher quality .308's really made me realize what it lacked.

Also a Safari Arms 1911, it was set up for competition and I was too early in my gun owning career to appreciate it.

All the guns I've sold voluntarily - that is not being forced to by circumstance - I haven't regretted.

I've sold/traded guns just to try something new and my only regret is selling a Colt Goldcup Natl Match. I bought it right and after a few years and several hundred rounds sold it for double the money allowing me to purchase two new pistols. Don't have them any more either but I sure wish I had that Colt back.

Sold MY TC Contender with 44 mag, 222 Remington, and 256 Mag barrels because I hadn't used them in 20 years or more.

Sold an AMT Hardballer after carrying it in the woods for years, and while at the time (the early 80's) stainless 45's were a novelty, when I got rid of it there were plenty of better stainless 45's to get.

So I got no regrets in my anxiety closet. I do have a Giant Purple Snorkel Wacker in there, but no gun regrets at all...

I've only sold a few firearms and that was only because I didn't like them. My only regret happened recently when I sold my colt mustang (.380) that I bought new in 1994. I sold it last year after owning it for 19years. I was all jammed up after finding a particular Beretta that I had lusted for for many, many years. I had to act quickly. Looking at it as one or the other, it was and still is a no brainer and I'd do it again, today, tomorrow, and everyday thereafter. My regret is that at the time and under the circumstance there was no other way.
