10 day waiting period

Postby Grayskies on Wed Nov 26, 2014 5:17 pm

As I remember MN has a ten day wait to buy a handgun/evilblackweapon, a ptp will get around it if you are thinking ahead.

I believe CA's ten day wait was recently found unconstitutional, is it worth trying to get MN's ended?

Doesn't really affect me much, but other people who did not think they would need a gun, but find themselves in a riot zone, or whose life is threatened it, could be affected...

Not that waiting periods aren't bogus, but if you need a gun that quickly you can always get a "sporting" firearm- 12ga shotgun or semi-auto rifle.

True but if you were being stalked a 12 gauge doesn't conceal to well. I guess I just don't think waiting periods are effective and add a just one more burden to a right that is pretty heavily burdend as it is. Probably preaching to the choir though.

With the current Governor and DFL controlled Senate, I do not think such a bill would pass and get signed. My personal opinion is that political capital is better spent elsewhere right now.

That said, I think this restriction is stupid and unconstitutional and needs to go away.

Fight it in the courts as unconstitutional. Skip the dems from the metro who think they know what is good for the entire state

Since when is there a 10 day waiting period in Minnesota? Since moving here a year ago, I've purchased 3 pistols, all from gun shops, and walked out with them. What am I missing here?

you have either a permit to purchase or a permit to carry. The OP was talking about a little recognized provision that allows the store to fill out the PtP info and submit it on your behalf... I know of no store that will actually do it though. They will instruct you to go get your PtP

There is no waiting period to buy a handgun in MN if one has a PTP or a PTC.

Yes, I have a PTC. I thought there was something strange because in order to buy from an FFL, a permit is necessary (private sales require neither a permit or waiting period). So, essentially a pistol can be purchased without a permit, but the little used waiting period would subject the purchaser to the same scrutiny as if they'd applied for the permit.

So why not get a PTP or PTC, anyway?

Correct, but you do have to wait to get the PTP, and that almost always takes more than 10 days.

PTP typically takes longer than PTC so your 7 day wait doesn't correlate to PTP. Carver cty was 4 days including 3pm drop of paperwork and mail time for PTC but PTP for an acquaintance was 14.

The Rodentwoman used to impose a 10 day waiting period. She still does, but now they are continuous and consecutive, and I no longer care.

There's a box on the PTP form that asks if the application is new or a renewal. Since they are no cost to me to get one, I have been getting my PTP renewed every year. This last time it took TWO days to turn it around. Not bad. :D
