Gun serial numbers in videos?

Postby Tronster on Mon Jan 05, 2015 7:51 pm

So I'm looking to start a youtube gun channel (shooting, gun designs and bench reviews). How critical is it to hide the serial numbers of the guns in the videos, to avoid a viewer from claiming it's their "long lost gun" and making life difficult for me, or is that just not a problem?

I don't know how convincing of a case someone could make that your gun is their gun, but why invite the problem?

I don't bother hiding mine. Really what can someone do with my serial number? I have receipts invoices showing I bought it, company records etc. You can play the what if game u til you're blue in the face but at the end of the day I'm not worried about it all and don't care. I know some are worried about big brother or who ever else knowing serial numbers but I'm not one of them.

It's probably not a big deal 99.999% of the time, but a piece of masking tape or electrical tape and 10 seconds is nothing in the grand scheme of scripting, taping, editing, and uploading. I'm sure it will eliminate more than 30 seconds worth of reading comments left on your videos about serial numbers being visible... There is also that 0.001% of the time where you bought a gun 4th-hand from a private seller on armslist and don't know the history on it.

Gun(s) ----------- Check.
Mags ------------- Check.
Talking points --- Check.
Targets ---------- Check.
Tape -------------- Check.

Sounds like the simple answer is cover the SN. Like mentioned, why invite trouble when it only takes a few seconds...thanks.

I filed mine off.

If you are really worried about it I have a service that will take these exposed firearms off your hands for a modest fee after you are done filming.

Just thought I would offer.

Your service charges a disposal fee? I have a service that pays current scrap value... ;)

I know the serial # 12345XXX thing is common but does anyone have a documented case of serial numbers being a problem?
