A fully shotgun zone legal 12 gauge rifled 18" barreled shotgun firing Hornady SST sabot slugs puts more energy (ft-lbs) into a target at 100 yards (1795 vs 962) and 200 yards (1199 vs 734) than a 9" .300 BLK AR pistol. The .300 drops 8.6 inches at 200 yards with the 12 gauge at 11.6. If you run Foster/Brenekke style slugs in a smoothbore shotgun it's a lot closer in performance to the .300 BLK though.
Given the choice I'd take a pump 12 gauge with a rifled barrel and a low-power scope with a box of Hornady into the woods down south, I've made some pretty long shots with my 870 + weaver 1-3 scope shooting the SST slugs. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and preferences though.
