Federal is currently making and shipping over 4 million rounds per day and will be adding another loading line this year. I don't know about Remington or Winchester but I would bet that they are at about the same level. One thing to remember is that load lines are not a plug and play item and capital has to be justified.

Pffft

We all know the real shortage is being caused by the daily black helicopter flights out of that facility :ugeek:

Thinking about this situation it's kind of interesting... I don't recall any other product I've ever seen in the past where it has been scarce for over two years and almost every item stocked is sold out within hours. Does anyone else remember some type of product that has been so scarce?

Actually, I don't think there is any equivalent item. Any sociologists out there that can explain this phenomenon?

A shortage at the level of current .22 ammo? Like "it's not in any stores except at random times of delivery once or twice a week and then is gone immediately". Even gas wasn't that rare. And I don't think the gas shortage lasted 2+ years, did it?

Complicated round to make for the price point it occupies. Hard to make up the margin on volume either.

If people would quit buying it out every time they see it...

Used to be that you'd buy a brick for the weekend's shooting...or 2x50's when you were rabbit/squirrel hunting. Now guys are buying 3-4-18 bricks " just in case".

That, coupled with the price point thing above, is why its STILL not in stock.
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

I think that's where we are at. We're probably past the point of a true shortage, mainly past the flippers on GB and at gunshows, but now everyone is "stocking up".

The other thing that may be increasing demand is the popularity of mag dumps. Even as a kid, when bulk .22 was less than 2 cents per round, I don't recall people going through ammo like they do now. "Plinking" was still somewhat aimed fire at targets, cans, whatever.......It wasn't just emptying the mag into the bank as fast as you could pull the trigger. Doesn't take long to burn through a brick that way.

Back when my children were living with me, we shot 22's a lot.
But that was 6 years ago when 22's were CHEAP in bulk.
I would buy two or three bulk packs a month during the Summer months.
We would have our Annual Shoot-off with 22's using five to seven rifles, rotating when they got hot.
We would empty a 30 cal ammo can during one of these events.
We had FUN !!! and now we miss it, with one living in Virginia and the other in Oklahoma.

And I haven't shot a 22LR cartridge in 3 years.

I've donated ammo to different events so children could learn to shoot.

I will make the same offer as last year:
Any Father-Son or Father-Daughter or Wife-Son or Wife-Daughter that shows up at my place (or at OGC on Monday) and the parent/child demonstrates safe handling of their firearm, will receive a FREE box of 50 cartridges of 22LR.
Limited to the 15 boxes I have left - I have other bulk but my son dumped into ammo can without labeling, mixing several brands together.

I will bring some to Oakdale Gun Club on Monday - we will be on 200 meter range shooting 50's, doing initial sight-in of 4 scopes, and chronoing some Match rounds.

I think the price should be what the market will bear and not the "Pre-Obama" price. I'm okay with that, because right now supply is more important. Compared to shooting virtually any other ammo, a brick at $50 is still way cheaper.

.223/5.6 is a good example - prices went up when the shelves got bare. The prices have gone down as people stopped hoarding it. The prices still aren't down to where they should be, but at least I can find it when I need it.

The industry and many shooting groups promote .22LR for beginners, and they should absolutely do that. But, supply needs to eventually catch up to demand. In my opinion, the only way to do that is to raise the price until people stop buying every box they find on the shelves.

Well, all of our stations were sold out of the rationed amount by noon everyday and prices doubled in a matter of months.
22 ammo is still hitting all the stores, just isn't staying on the shelves. Timing is still everything

CDNN Sports has been advertising various Remington .22LR at $0.10/round for months... one month it's bricks of Goldens, next month it's Thunderbolts in cases of 500 (ten 50-packs) or 5,000, every few months they're advertising Bucket-O-Bullets... It may not be your brand, but it's .22LR...

Still I think high, but I am more than happy to let all those hoarders stock up on Remington rimfire. ;)
