How to properly sell a shotgun

Postby mecra on Sun Jun 21, 2015 11:45 am

Hey guys. I want to sell an 870 shotgun. (Will be posting it in the marketplace soon.)

My question is, what is the best method to facilitate the sale? Do I need to have a place like Bills get involved? It's not a pistol or AR so I'm not sure what I need to do to ensure proper documentation. Thanks guys.

AFAIK, you can just sell it. But, if it were me, would require PtP/PtC to cover your butt unless you know the person. But then again, can go to any swap meet and pay cash with no paper work.

You can require whatever you want. If the buyer is not willing to meet you requirements that's their choice. You don't need an FFL intermediary. It's usually a good idea to complete a bill of sale.

Personally I ask to see a permit to carry or a permit to purchase with their driver license if I do not know them.
I also do a bill of sale, here is a link.

Did have one guy get really mad at me because I would not sell to him unless he showed me a PTC or PTP. He said this was a private sale, MN law does not require he have a PTC or PTP, etc., etc. Told him there was also no law saying I had to sell to him, never did and he was not happy.

However, you DO need a FFL to do a transfer if the buyer is from out of state. Face to to face with no paperwork only works (legally) if you both live in the same state. :)

good Idea but what'll you charge? lets pretend its an express with a fancy pistol grip limbsaver recoil (spring tension) reducing stock and a nice looking wood foregrip( the diamondy pattern one_with a barely{I think perfectly appropriate} dingy patina ) lets just say it comes with a nice old wooden ammo box with metal hardware and something like 80 various rds some reduced recoil oobuck+slugs, some old paper magnum seeming stuff some hornady critical and zombie ones too[some boxes incl]? 600$ even if I don't know what to do about the little bits of rust?
