NICS PIN

Postby my1stpistol on Tue Dec 08, 2015 6:16 pm

Does anyone know how I go about getting a PIN? I get delayed almost every time I buy a gun. 4 out of 5 so far. A employee said I should get a # but didn't know how....
Did a little googling and searching on here already with no luck. I found one post from 2010 that has been disonnected.

If you work your way through this document, I think you'll get the needed information
ETA:
This is the short answer:

Voluntary Appeal File (VAF)

If you continue to experience transaction denials or lengthy delays as a result of subsequent firearm background checks, you may be eligible for entry into the NICS Voluntary Appeal File (VAF). For more information pertaining to the VAF, you may contact the NICS Customer Service at 1-877-444-NICS (6427).

Thank you. The info I need was in there. Not as as simple as I hoped it would be.
Anyone else have these problems buying? Its fine when it's close to home, but going 45 miles one way to save 25$ on a FFL transfer is hardly worth it when I have to go back.

Just don't expect the UPIN to be a cure all. I was getting delayed on every transaction - got annoyed and was told by a gun store to get the UPIN and I won't get delayed anymore so I got my NTN numbers and did the paperwork. That was 2 years and 13 transactions ago - still delayed every time. Took a while for me, but you just get used to it. I know that if I fill my paperwork out Monday, NICS will call back on Wednesday. Sucks but it is the way it is.

I jumped through all of the hoops a year ago to get a UPIN number in hopes of getting rid of the "delay" response and too was surprised the second time I purchased a pistol that I got a "delay"!

I find that when the nics check is called in, I never get delayed using my UPIN.

If a computer is used for the nics check, more times than not, it will still come back as a "delay" using my UPIN #.

I will echo the call vs e-check. FFL I use now only does e-check and it has been 100% delays. Last year i transferred a couple firearms thru a neighboorhood pawn shop that calls, 2 out of 4 were instant proceeds. Gosh I hate NICS...

Thanks all.
I got the correct paperwork printed out. But by the sounds of it it may or may not help me. I guess I'll just have to deal with it. From now on I will just have them shipped to my favorite LGS and not have to worry about a 2nd out of the way trip.

I'm also in the delayed every time camp. I've thought about getting the UPIN#, but half the dealers I talk to say it seldom makes a difference. Sucks, because it's made going to gun shows useless and I don't even bother browsing the guns when I'm at an "out of town" gun shop, because if I find a deal, it's just gonna piss me off when I get delayed.

I have a frequent customer who was always delayed. I found that if I called midweek, instead of on a weekend, the results were better. Think it depends on how busy they are.

That's where I'm at. Had my most current purchase done on the internet from the Sportsmans Guide and shipped to them to save the 25$ on the transfer. Now I get to go all the way back down there. Will wind up costing me about 20$ in fuel when it's all said and done and an hour and a half of my time

NICS PIN

Postby Jreinan01 on Wed Dec 09, 2015 8:32 pm

Now oddly, I have been delayed every single time I tried to buy a firearm for the last 20 years...but the last two have been approved right away. No clue why
