Ammo restriction...

Postby Rodentman on Mon Jan 11, 2016 7:09 pm

A friend of mine (I have a few) in NY state says there is a move there to restrict ammo purchases to twice the gun's capacity every 90 days. So an owner of a 6 shot revolver could buy 12 rounds every 90 days or be charged with a felony and serve up to 4 years in prison.

So wouldn't that promote people buying firearms with the highest possible capacity magazines?

It is an extension of the logic of if the second amendment says that you can't restrict gun ownership, there is nothing that says that you can't restrict the ammo. They will starve the shooter if they can't grab your guns.

Tell your friend to write his state legislator and tell him that shooting a couple of hundred rounds per month for target practice is extremely common, at least in states where guns are less restricted.

How does one buy just 12 rounds?

You can read about it here:http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2015/dec/23/new-york-lawmakers-float-bill-to-restrict-gun-ammo/

So, are they saying that they do not want legal gun owners to be well-practices and competent shooters?

They want to make gun owners get licenses and mandatory training but want to make it next to impossible to practice?

If the restriction is per gun, it's an extra incentive to grow the revolver collection.

Would the restriction also apply to reloading components?

Even in New York, there's no way a bill that absurd can pass. I mean, I get that anti-gun politicians are generally pretty clueless about the reality of owning and using guns, but this is just incoherent, ridiculous legislative flailing.

Absurd? absolutely. Imposable to pass? don't bet your life on it.

Remember, this is the state which in it's zeal to pass an assault weapon and magazine ban, forgot to exempt law enforcement.

Also remember, in New York, magazines are restricted to less than 10 rounds, and it's illegal to have more than 7 loaded at any time.

What if you have an M1 Garand and have loaded clips instead?? I'm a little surprised that the lawmakers go the magazine part right in the 1st place.

Oh, I'm aware that NY is beyond silly when it comes to guns, but this bill would effectively ban *all* shooting sports, including (especially?) "harmless" ones like trap and skeet. Can you imagine a guy with a single-shot trap gun having to "save up" purchases for over 3 years to shoot a single round of trap because he can't buy more than 2 shells every 3 months? Heck, even bird hunters would be ruined by it. "Well, that's it, I've fired my fourth shell, I guess I'm done for the season..."

I'm sure the deep thinkers either didn't think of that or just don't care.

I've heard from a friend in NY. He says this bill gets introduced every year and assures me it has no chance of passing.
