Among other places:

"Each licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, and licensed dealer shall maintain such records of importation, production, shipment, receipt, sale, or other disposition of firearms at his place of business for such period, and in such form, as the Attorney General may by regulations prescribe." 18 U.S.C. 923(g)(1)(A)

You will notice this states "at his place of business", not "by his place of business"

Hmmm. Ok, thanks for the info.

In the end, the buyer and I will work through a singular FFL, who will do the transfer, and split the cost. Worth the $10.

Your obligations under Minnesota law are going to be covered if you check and document the buyer's PTC/PTP and check their driver's license to be sure that they're a Minnesota resident. I don't have a problem making the sale with the assistance of an FFL and going the whole 4473 route, but it is a little cumbersome since you have to find an FFL willing to do it for a reasonable price. I know Gander Mountain doesn't just want a transfer fee, they want a consignment fee too. Maybe it's a good idea these days after Obama's recent EO sob story, but I doubt that the occasional seller (not "in the business") is at any risk.

I'll ask over at Fleet Farm this morning. They haven't had a problem with private sales there in the past (especially if you're buying some range time), but it's been awhile since I did that and maybe their policy has changed. And I'm curious to know what they would charge to handle the transfer.

I think you're misreading this, it states that the records need to be maintained at his place of business not that there needs to be a record of every transaction including transactions by customers.

But IANAL, so what do I know?

Yeah, I don't know either. If it comes up again, I'll ask before actually exchanging money for receipt for a firearm I sell on the range's premises.
