I check everything three times before I get ready to go through security. Still makes me nervous that I may have missed a shell.

Missed a giant bottle of sunscreen in my carry on. Went through security three times before they noticed it on the fourth flight. I just said "oops feel free to throw it, have a nice day".

Something similar happened to me. 2 years ago at MSP. Caught a last minute flight to NYC (I have a residence there, too). Grabbed my backpack and went to the airport. Got stopped at the conveyor. Guy asked me was there anything in the bag that should t be. Said no. He dug into the bag and pulled out a box of 380 ammo. I GOT SICK. No firearm, of course. I took out my license and PTC. I was lucky I had my glasses, ear pro and a folded up target in the bag too. I told him I was just at the range, forgot it was there. They called MPD over. That took 5 minutes. The 2 guys said they were sorry but they had to confiscate it. Said I wasn't under arrest. After that, they walked me over to the DHS lady who copied down my drivers license info. And I was on my way. 15 minutes and caught my flight. 2 weeks later I get a letter from the DOJ (I think, don't remember). Said I had committed a civil offense and I could pay a $250 fine. Wrote the check and that was that. Have flown MANY times since and I'm apparently NOT on any list. I LEARNED A VALUABLE LESSON THAT DAY.

Who's the victim of your crime?

Sam, that comment is racist. We have all kinds of white idiots who bomb federal buildings and didn't need to get on a plane to do it. 9/11 they used box cutters and only one of 4 planes put up any fight at all. That's the real tragedy.

Since anyone could get irate and do something crazy, like shoot up the cabin at 20,000'; why are pilots now allowed to carry? They're little more than taxi drivers of a big freaking bus and half of them can't land the plane without the computer doing it for them these days anyway (do some research on pilot proficiency sometime - you might decide to walk instead).

But the fact remains that these laws are contrary to our God given rights (the bill of rights), and our benevolent dictators have removed them in the name of public safety (Ben Franklin had some smart words to say about that concept). So I'm sure all of you will be in favor of another AWB, because, the children! Right? And we should have socialism because some people are too stupid to carry health insurance, right? And if you can't trust the guy in 22A with a gun in mid flight, you shouldn't trust him on the ground with one either, and we don't have a way to mentally screen anyone so I guess we just need to ban all guns...

Seriously? This is what the brain trust here has come to? My ideology is what founded this country. Maybe yours is out of whack with what we need here.

There was no crime. It was a civil matter, only.

I believe in constitutional carry. I also believe in remaining lawful. Not interested in having my rights taken from me for failure to abide by laws that I consider illegal. So, in that regard, I'm forced to comply. My efforts of agitation today are focused on reducing infringements that are already in place. We need to repeal the NFA and the draconian Gun control Acts. Until then, I'd like to have the Supreme Court force all states to accept each others carry permits, like a drivers license, until constitutional carry is recognized. No, I don't want federal reciprocity. There's a difference. And yes, that means with states honoring other permits, I should be able to carry on a plane.

I have flown enough long haul flights now to realize that many folks do not behave rationally on a plane.

Further, you have a bunch of other folks and their kids on the plane as well.

To me, a firearm without the means to lock it away from all non authorized folks is an attractive nuisance. Common law has long held that no right is absolute, and you sure aren't going to win the PR battle allowing more marginal gun handlers having weapons on planes... What happens with the first AD?

I can sympathize with the idea of freedom, but if you really want to carry on a plane, buy your own and then you can, until then it is what it is.

There was a fine, which makes it a crime. Not crime in the sense of being locked up, but you were punished for it none the less.

I agree with you on the rest.

I'm not saying we should all try to carry on a plane because we should have the right to. I'm just saying that the notion that unjust laws should be heeded without question is absurd. If gun owners were as violent as the anti's think, there wouldn't be any anti's left.

PIlots have always been allowed to carry. It is only recently that they have been required to complete Federal Flight Deck Officer training in order to carry in the cockpit. The vast majority of pilots have not taken this training.

The supreme court did not force all states to accept each other's drivers licences. (States must accept them as a form of ID, but not as a license to drive.) You can legally drive in other states because the other states have state statutes which allow you to, not because of a federal law or SCOTUS ruling.

I'm not advocating allowing folks to carry on planes, but the way the procedures and penalties are currently set up seems equivalent to using fuel-air explosives to kill single mosquitoes. Why does it need to be a multi-kilobuck felony when they get caught at the security screening? Why not just give them the option of having the gun confiscated/destroyed or speedily finding some off-site storage? Obviously leaving a gun in your carry-on is a dumb thing to do, but in most cases, it's a brain fart situation rather than something caused by actual malice/ill intent. Why not treat it as such and give people a chance to fix the problem? If you get patted down going into a concert and you have something they don't want to let into the venue, you go put it in your car and come back. Why does this need to be any different?

Exactly.

None of the provisions of the Bill of Rights have ever been held to recognize or confer a boundless libertarian immunity from government interference (although the zero-gov crowd wishes it did). "Strict scrutiny" is the standard most people would agree with as justified in limiting a right, and in my humble opinion allowing every passenger on a plane to decide whether or not they all die meets that standard.

There may be more people on a flight armed than you think and I am not talking about a fun jet vacation flying to Cancun. They will usually be seated in the back and they may be moving a prisioner or have some type of alphabet soup agency attached to their I.D.....
