My boy is pretty lucky

Postby hard h2o on Sun Mar 20, 2016 10:35 pm

Whitetails Unlimited banquet last night. My son won the youth grand door prize.

Henry youth lever action .22

Last year he won a Stevens Cadet single shot bolt action .22

Had to take a picture of him and his new levergun and me with my old levergun.

He is anxious for squirrel season to start.

I am a big fan of the Henry lever action rifles, I always look at them when I'm in the LGS. Congrats!

Started him out with the .22s. He won the Stevens Cadet. First time out with it he had minimal instruction and punched a lot of holes in the paper. I tried to correct him on a few things but it just annoyed him. Ended up just letting him go for now. Going to slowly correct him over time. He likes to hunch over bags that are too low. He contorts to be able to see the sights.

He is a bit recoil shy. Trying to make sure I bring him out to OGC when it is not busy. He hates when we are on a bench next to someone with a big badaboom. Especially if it has a muzzle brake.

He tried the .243 and did not like it. Working on getting him to shoot the .30-30.

He is taking firearm safety this spring at OGC. I passed the info around to the dads of his friends and got a few of them signed up as well.

Was hoping to hit the range with him Wednesday evening to try the little Henry out. Looks like we will have a practice so pew pew with the new levergun is delayed.

IMO, if he's already shown an aversion to recoil and noise, I'd stick with the smaller calibers until he tells you he wants to experiment. No sense in scaring him off. Through exposure on the range, he'll be made aware over time what the larger calibers are capable of. When he is curious enough, and that outweighs the fears that he has (and that only he can quantify), he'll let you know. He already knows what's available to him and your willingness to allow it. Take your time and cultivate a young man who will always love the shooting sports and become a defender of the 2A.

If you're only going to shoot the .22 at OGC, ask to be put in the pistol bay (A bay) away from the ARs and AKs in B bay. I'm pretty sure they will accomidate you. :D

I am a member at OGC so I try to time our trips to when it is less busy. I think we are going to be able to get out there this Saturday morning.

He went deer hunting last year. He needs to shoot a few rounds out of the .30-30 or .243 if he wants to do that. I am going to let him shoot the least I can and be confident that he can shoot accurately enough.

I think you guys are confusing OGC with someplace else.
See H & H's post on the topic.

Sorry. Yes I meant Oakdale Gun Club.

As long as I can remember OGC meant Oakdale Gun Club.
