Being a range officer there, it's against our published rules but we do usually let people do it....especially if they just got done shooting an AR and are now shooting a pistol waiting for the AR to cool down. That's OK by me. The one problem I do not allow is having a 9mm and 40 cal pistols of the SAME make out at the same time. It's too easy to insert the wrong mag in the wrong gun. :D

So, if they take the mags out of their bag that has both 9mm and .40 mags in it that is much safer?

How is that a range safety issue? Maybe I missed something somewhere along the line?

a 9mm will shoot out of a 40 but not cycle the action

same with a 380 out of a 9mm

I've seen both

I have seen some folks shoot a 9 mm out of a .40, and while it sounds like a squib, the bullet will penetrate cardboard at short range.

A .380 will fire fine in a 9mm, and will penetrate as well as a .380 ever does and function the gun. As long as the extractor gets over the rim, you probably won't notice that you are using the wrong ammo untill you pick up brass. Same with shooting .40 out of a 10mm. The shorter brass fits the chamber fine, it just doesn't headspace well.

Not neccessarily. I've seen a few shooters shoot 9mm through a 40...the front half of the cases are expanded to 40 proportions and most are cracked. I try to watch as best I can but if a shooter inserts a 9mm mag in a 40 gun that accepts those mags, quite frankly, I'm not goung to catch it until I see a few blown cases on the ground. (yes, I DO watch the cases being ejected).
