Is using a comp on your AR at an indoor range reasonable or polite?

1-Yes, gun ranges are loud and people can double up on ear pro if it bugs them. Plus fireballs are awesome.

It's an indoor gun range. People going to shoot there should realize that guns are loud and they should plan accordingly. I don't feel that I need to modify my plans to accommodate their lack of preparation.

Indoor range where it will be louder than the norm and folks will be concerned about appearances, yes. And yes, I think that folks can tell the difference between a 11.5" AR and a M4gery. Wouldn't take too many shots to hear the diffence either, with a comp. Especially if you are someone trying to practice CQB technique stuff.

Personally I am fine with live and let live, but if you are trying to shoot together on an indoor range, some folks insistence on using stuff that doesn't quite fit the milieu will disrupt it for others. Would you want to be in there when someone decides to shoot an overbore magnum or .50 BMG? That's about a similar order of magnitude above a comped .223 that a comped .223 is above a standard handgun. The owners will decide what they allow, it's their business and they can decide without my say so.

The point of this thread I thought was what is courteous to your fellow indoor range shooters. In a full indoor range a CF rifle or such is not. Even with a muzzle baffle, the sound echos off the walls. The fact that so many here bring SBR's and such to them (really I have never seen one except at Bills back when they rented them) is in my opinion, showing off, see what a neat toy (or what a hardcore bad ass i am) that worsens the experience for others. If it's a noted time to use one, a dedicated rifle bay, or there is no one else there, I would have no objections to it, but that is pretty far afield there, and really when is the last time you have been at a indoor range without a few people shooting?

I have had the rifle bay to myself quite often at BPR.

Your demonization of SBR's is both hilarious and appalling.

Demonization? Hardly.

I have a couple.

They are substantially louder and more muzzle flash than standard ARs. Add a comp, and its more so. Again, outside, this is much less an issue. My problem is indoors, not AR/SBR. Heck, I said no centerfire rifles inside...hardly AR centric.

Demonization with regard to taking an SBR to an indoor range. You know, to show off. Because heaven forbid a 10 minute drive to put some holes in paper and have a machine bring you the target, instead of the 30 minute drive to freeze my ass off at the outdoor range where I'm not a show off, doesn't make any sense.

Oh and don't put a can on because that would be showing off. I call it being courteous.

Should we just ban NFA? I hate to hurt other people's feelings.

Do you have any opinions on lasers? They cost a lot more than my cans. Hate to show off with a laser.

Courteous is courteous a range is a range, both can exist at the same time with SBRs, rifles at under 100, and comps. Just use your head and be courteous. Not that hard.

But then again, maybe I am just oblivious and am the jerk, good thing I stick to Oakdale for most of my shooting.

Don't get me wrong, I don't care what others shoot. If it bothers me I'll leave, enjoy your shooting.

I'm sure not going to say any certain type of gun shouldn't be allowed, except for guns that exceed the capabilities of the facility.

Where can I shoot my M1875 Hotchkiss mountain gun? It must be in the metro, allow battle maneuvers, and rapid fire. That said it does not have a comp so we should be covered there.

A bit further West into South Minneapolis and no one would notice another guy with a gun, except H&H is white. Hmmm Maybe a Burka?

Shooting next to a guy with a compensator can be a bit annoying. My son hates it.

I would not go so far as to question someone's motives for shooting an SBR, anything comped, or anything with a can in a venue where those things are allowed.

I would question the need for a compensator on a .223 or such. It is such a mild round outside of timed competition where fast second shots will matter.

How about not deliberately being a douchebag....does that work?

The previous 4 posts seem to cover it.
I would only add, after reading this thread, as one who avoids indoor ranges, that some of the behavior discussed would definitely gain a fair degree of unfavorable attention and response at the outdoor ranges I frequent.

Pretty sure it was when Shippy, Strad and I took Strad's 16.1" Muzzle Brake Mosin to Bill's North and lit off the first round that I realized what being a douche on an indoor range meant.
