Small Group at 1000 yards

Postby OldmanFCSA on Mon Jul 09, 2018 1:25 pm

At the FCSA (Fifty Caliber Shooters Association) World Championship Match recently held at the NRA Whittington Center near Raton, NM; one of our members shot a 6.625" 5-shot group at 1000 yards and backed it up with a 2.4375" 5-shot group (we won't talk about his other groups).

Guess who ?

BigDog58 did it and received a very special award for his results from the FCSA.

Pictures to follow.

Thank you all. I'll post a picture of the beautiful, plaque I was awarded as soon as I recoup from the long drive, to and from Raton, NM.

I can't explain how happy I was to see these groups. Our matches call any group below 7" a "Screamer", and both of these, were my 1st & 2nd "Screamers", that I have ever shot in competition.

I owe a great deal to OldmanFCSA for this accomplishment. Over the years, has helped me to finally have at least a "clue" to understanding wind judgement, and making necessary corrections.

I learned a very hard lesson about shooting my rifle with a clean barrel. It turned out that I should have followed my "gut feeling" and cleaned my barrel of carbon build up. I should have cleaned the carbon between relays, and days. My groups opened up SIGNIFICANTLY, between relays, and I mistook them to be wind related (extreme vertical stringing). I cleaned the carbon after the 1st relay the second day, and my groups returned to acceptable sizes.

I may not shoot this small of a group again, but it will NOT, be because I did not clean the carbon, between relays.

:thankyou:
