New 12 ga. "toy" help...

Postby Fiery Red XIII on Sun Jan 25, 2009 10:45 pm

Yes, I know guns are not toys...just like the expression...anyways, posted this in 2 forums w/no replies thusfar, can anyone help me?

Hey all, just bought a Mossberg 835 w/a 28" barrel and had some ?'s. This is the first shotgun I've ever owned, never done skeet or anything, and have only shot my dad's semi-auto Bennelli (sp.), so please go easy on me. These are ?'s for making it a home defense gun, I will worry about bird hunting later.

1: I know the barrel is long, I plan on buying a shorter barrel for home defense, but the barrel is for lead or steel shot...will copper plated 00-Buck work in it? That's the only way I could find 00-Buck.

2: Should I pull the choke out?

3: The manual doesn't even say choke specific type for the #...It's an Accu-Mag 750...that # isn't in the manual.

4: The barrel is ported, will removing the choke tube cause bb's to come out the holes? (Until I get the shorter barrel of course.)

5: Is it safe to shoot "Magnum" shells? the gun chambers 2.77", 3", and 3.5" shells.

That's all I can think of for now, thank you for your time!

2: Should I pull the choke out? what choke is in it? go to a range, or the woods and check how it patterns at the ranges you'd find in your home, find the pattern you like, and use that choke

3: The manual doesn't even say choke specific type for the #...It's an Accu-Mag 750...that # isn't in the manual. no idea

4: The barrel is ported, will removing the choke tube cause bb's to come out the holes? (Until I get the shorter barrel of course.) see above

5: Is it safe to shoot "Magnum" shells? the gun chambers 2.77", 3", and 3.5" shells. as long as it's not too long magnum should work just fine out of a new gun

That's all I can think of for now, thank you for your time!

Hi Red,

I have read good things about the 835. Check out http://www.shotgunworld.com for the best shotgun info around (very large site with a Mossberg section).

1. Should be no problem.
2. Nope. The choke is there for a reason. You can change out the choke.
3. Check out the Mossberg site.
4. Unlikely. Don't remove the choke because there is no reason for HD use. Get a Cylinder choke as an interim.
5. I believe the 835 can handle 3.5" loads and the gun is made for Turkey and Duck/Goose hunting so it should not be a problem. Note: always check the barrel for the max size and any limitations.

Hope this helps.

*lead 00 buck will work just fine. Turkey loads, goose pheasant, trap loads will work also

2: Should I pull the choke out?
The choke or lack there of helps the shot pattern for the type of shooting. Google shotgun chokes for a better understanding.

3: The manual doesn't even say choke specific type for the #...It's an Accu-Mag 750...that # isn't in the manual.
I am not sure .

4: The barrel is ported, will removing the choke tube cause bb's to come out the holes? (Until I get the shorter barrel of course.)
The porting reduces the recoil at the cost of more noise. I am sure the shot will not come out of the holes. Google the guns owners manual for info.

5: Is it safe to shoot "Magnum" shells? the gun chambers 2.77", 3", and 3.5" shells.
Shoot what ever you want. The bigger the shell, usually the more powder, and shot. I suggest trap-skeet rounds for practice.

You want this for home defense, after you get your short barrel, i strongly suggest that you set up layers of sheet rock for testing.
Buck shot has a nasty way of penetrating sheet rock. I suggest you consider how much colateral damage firing a shotgun inside your home could do if you miss the bad guy. Use what ever load works. Many will say 00 buck only. I say bullS*&t. It is 3am, and Hillary or Barack didn't answer their phone. I will be sleepy, and might miss.
I personally use a mossberg 500 with #4 high base for home protection. Many will disagree but, it is my home.

That's all I can think of for now, thank you for your time!

1. Yes copper is fine, And may have a better pattern because the pellet isnt deformed on fireing

2-4 Do not fire without a choke tube, Doing so will damage the threads in the barrel

3. Dont understand what your asking

5. Yes magnum is fine, But isnt usually needed for HD recoil recovery will take longer.

Not to send you elsewhere but the Shotgun section over on THR, Look for Shotgun 101 bye

Why not just cut the barrel to the length you want (within the law, of course)? If you need help cutting metal, send me a PM.

Why ruin a perfectly good barrel?
It will also lower the "trade" value.

This is from shotgun website:
http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewtop ... ssberg+835
) 18.5" barrel with 3-1/2" chamber: Part#90823 (I think these only come in the blue finish) They are around $110.00. Mossberg does not advertise these on their site. You have to contact Customer Service to order one. I got mine on GunBroker for around $80.00...

2) Tactical Forend with strap: Part#12363 These are about $20.00 from Mossberg.

3) Pistol Grip: Part#95000 From the factory they run $25.00. I got mine on eBay for $18.00.

4) For the mag extension you need to get in touch with MAX100. He is a member here on the board. His mag extension is a very high quality piece of work!

The sling is a black web sling for an AR-15/M-16. I got it at a gun show many years ago and I have no idea what they cost now. Same for the front sling mount & swivel. I think it is a Choate though, so you can check their site and see what they run.

If it's strictly for home defense, no sense in sinking $$ into another barrel. Just cut it... and if it becomes a multi-purpose gun at some point, you can always buy the other barrel later. A good cut job on a tactical 12 won't necessarily affect the "TV," and it's easy to do. Just another thought for you here.

Pheasant tastes good. Hard to knock down with 18.5 barrel. The thought of destroying a perfectly good barrel just bothers me.
Regarding the "TV" can you explain that? I don't know what "trade vaule" means. I PFA'd that term.

If I had to fathom a guess, I'd say the Accu-Mag 750 refers to the inside diameter of the choke tube in inches. In this case, you're looking at a Modified Choke. Here's a link to Midway's description for the modified choke tube:

http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=981453

Common diameters for Accu-Mag chokes:
Extra-Full = .715
Full = .730
Modified = .750
Improved Cylinder = .765
Skeet = .770

As for the other questions, they were pretty well answered.

Instead of the 18.5" dedicated HD barrel, why not a Smooth Bore Rifle Sighted Slug Barrel? It's ~20-21" sure but that 1.5" isn't big and you could still use it for Deer.

FYI and people can correct me if I'm wrong, but in the shotgun world I believe "Magnum" means more shot at the same pressure, not more pressure. Consequently, Magnum loadings often have lower velocities, with more lead.

Wrongo and backwards. More velocity, sometimes less shot. often times a shorter wad is used to make more room for poweder.

Never shoot the gun without a choke tube installed.

The barrel porting will not be an issue for shot comming out because the shot is still in the wad at this point.

ETA: And yes, that gun will definnetly handle magnum shells.
