Kel Tec pf9 vs Kahr pm9

Postby zonk on Mon Jan 26, 2009 8:07 pm

Our 12th anniversary with my lady is rapidly approaching and I was thinking one of these two would be a perfect present . My girl is just about 5ft tall ( although she handles my beretta 92 easily she is a petite woman so I thought we need a smaller gun for her ) . I would really appreciate your opinion guys ! The Kahr pm9 is almost 3 times more expensive , does that make sense ? .What you guys think about the beretta 9000 as well ? I also will look into used pistols too . If anybody have one for sale I'd be happy to consider it .
Thank you in advance .

I think asking a bunch of dudes about a gun for a woman is a bad idea. Take her shooting and see what she likes. It's the only way to know for sure.

split the difference and look at the Kahr cw9, my ex wife was quite petite and the only guns she ever really complained about were the really subcompact single stackers, she complained of more directed recoil impulse. She ended up cayying a FNP-9 but was known on occasion to tote the cw9. I too have shot it and its a great little shooter for the money, but justa is right, take her to bills and get her to try what she think she will like, I think I have a coupon for free range time and a free rental, if I can find it, its hers.

I have a CW9 Kahr that I have not been able to put more than30 to 35 rounds down range at any one time. My wife didnt put a full mag (7 rounds) through it before she set it down. She will go take a break when the Kahr comes out at the range. I have never tried a Kel Tec of any type.

You are right jusaguy , I should have said ladies instead of guys . I believe there are quite a few lady members in our organization and I seek their advice too .

Have her choose. My wife and I are going shooting on Wednesday where she will try a bunch of my inventory including couple of Kel-tecs. Find a local person to have her try some guns and let you know which one she likes. Or bring her to a gun show for a touch and feel with guns and see what she likes.

I love the PF9 and carried it today and the price is right. If you do get one avoid the blued version and go with parkerized or hard chrome. Note: Mine is 100% reliable.

Have you looked into something like a .38 special +P Ladysmith J-frame? Or a S&W 638?

You can practice with powder-puff .38's, and carry +P.
It turns out that what you have is less important than what you do with it.

Thanks monschman , if you find that coupon I will take advantage of it . I'm going to watch the superball at friend of mine's place in Dayton this sunday so will probably swing by Bill's before that .

The Kahr is a higher quality gun than the Kel Tec. You may notice that Kel Tecs benefit from a Fluff and Buff (instructions can be found online). The Kahr is good to go minus a little break-in.

I have a P45 that has been 100% reliable since round one.

Careful... Her husband is a Marine. Not that she'd need his help - from what I've seen and read from her, my guess is she can fend for herself pretty well.

I have had a PF9, and sold it after 500 rounds. It is quite the pocket rocket and not a range gun. Too much recoil for me (200 lb male). Even with Hogue grips it just hurt after a couple mags. I know some women are tougher than me, but I am considering the metal frame MK9 from Kahr. The extra weight might make it more manageable.
