Believe it or not but later in the sixties prices dropped even lower. As a paper boy I was able to order guns and afford them from ads like this. sports afield and True Adventures had ads for 1911's as low as 9.95. M1carbines for under 20 bucks. I remember seeing Krags for less than ten dollars all the time.

Someday we'll be reminiscing about today's prices and how we should have bought more at these prices when we had the chance.

I'll take one of each. What number can I have my FFL dealer fax to?

H&H, back then it was USPS delivery to the mailbox. NO stinkin' FFL's needed. I remember buying mossberg .22's from the army/CMP for $8.75 I still have a couple of them. There was a wholesaler in NYC that handguns from everywhere, I think RG's were 5 dollars, and H&R and Iver johnsons were about the same. My Mauser HsC was from them, and I paid 17.50 for it.

Don't just look at the pictures, go to the link and check out the magazine. The ads are pretty cool.

According to an inflation calculator I found

$1 in 1957 is the same as $7.56 in 2008.

Given that, the M1903 and the .45 colt on the image I posted would cost $300 today. Still a nice deal.

Those were the days... Now you have to find the item (hope you even can), win an auction for it on some web site, get an FFL to fax over, get a certified check or a money order to send, hope the seller is legit and sends the item, go in to do the transfer,... Will it ever be as simple as it was back then again?

Image

How about a Browning A5 in 1957 for $127.75? Funny thing about this picture, I own the JC Higgins Model 20 in the upper left. It's actually a High Standard Mod 200, relabeled JC Higgins for Sears. It's an interesting gun that I haven't been able to part with... I'm going to do a little review of it here when I have a chance.
