Limit on purchasing hand guns?

Postby brauchma on Fri Sep 07, 2007 9:49 pm

Is there a limit to the number of handguns you can buy at one time in MN? i

.e. I go in and buy a Kel-tec and then want to also buy a XD... does this fly? So try to buy 2 guns at once...

That works. i have purchased 3 at a time in the past (all used .....but from a dealer)
More than 3 in a week (IIRC) from one dealer and they have to fill out an additional form, which you never even see.

An employee at Bill's told me they won't sell anyone more than one gun in three days.

That seems strange, I have purchased two in one transaction, then gone back later that day and bought another from them. :? :?

You can buy as many as you like. FFLs correct me if I'm wrong, the FFL must notify the local Sheriff if you buy >1 gun at once.

Roger at BPR told me that if you buy more then one handgun at a time he had to fill out extra paperwork for the BATF, but you can buy as many long guns at a time as you want.

Not true. I was debating between two guns and bought one. The next day I went back and bought another.

I think if you buy 2 from the same dealer inside a week they have to file the extra paper. They might also notify the sheriff where you live, but I'm not sure about that.

If you want to stay more anonymous then you just have to buy the guns from different dealers :)

Does ANYONE, read your Form 4473 when you fill it out?

It simply says that you need to report additional handguns in a 3 day period on a second form. No restrictions or anything else.

The additional form only applies to hand guns, not assault rifles.

What form???? ;)

the reason I ask is a guy I know (recent permit holder) went in to buy a Kel-tec. He saw a XD 45 that he liked and was going to buy them both. The guy at the shop said he can't buy more than one handgun at a time. I thought you could but just wanted to clarify here.

I won't say which dealer it was, but it was in Spicer, MN.

From the amount of questions that show up like this, I would not be surprised.

Must have been Mel's. I drive by there and usually stop in on my way to and from hunting. I'm wondering if it's just their store policy or if someone wasn't just making up their own rules. Their prices are a little high, even when compared to Gander or Sportsman's Warehouse. Their handgun selection kind of sucks, from what I've seen.

I have bought more than one on a few occasions from dealers, no problem. The dealer I use most is very up on the laws, so I doubt that there is anything illegal about purchasing more than one gun at a time. I know Scheels in Mankato has the buyer read and sign a sheet that states that the buyer hasn't made a purchase in the past XXX period of time from Scheels. Don't remember if it was a period of weeks or months.
