(And I thought Old Dude was, well, old!)
On Saturday, I had a father (age 86) and son (age 60) come and attend a basic firearms safety class (NRA First Steps). The son had shot a gun before...once. The father, never.
Apparently the father and son were talking about a week or two ago and the father said that before he heads to the big roundup in the sky, he wanted to experience shooting a handgun.
So, we did.
He (the father) is mentally sharp as a tack, but had some physical limitations (actually lives in an Assisted Living facility), ...and, he did all of his shooting from a wheelchair. The father was game to try many different guns. He spent most of his time with revolvers (he was the reason I opted to get a Ruger Single Six on Friday), as he could safely load and shoot them. He tried a number of semi-autos, liked shooting them, but was not physically able to manipulate the slide etc.
We spent a lot more time on the range than I had scheduled, but for a good reason....they were having too much fun!
They both live in Fargo, and are heading off to buy a Ruger GP100 and most likely a S&W model 617. The father had trouble with the very fine skill needed to load etc. with the Single Six.
So, if there is an age that is "too old" (and of course there isn't), I know that it is not 86!
Way too much fun!
