You are never to old to go shooting!

Postby phorvick on Mon Sep 24, 2007 1:42 pm

(And I thought Old Dude was, well, old!)

On Saturday, I had a father (age 86) and son (age 60) come and attend a basic firearms safety class (NRA First Steps). The son had shot a gun before...once. The father, never.

Apparently the father and son were talking about a week or two ago and the father said that before he heads to the big roundup in the sky, he wanted to experience shooting a handgun.

So, we did.

He (the father) is mentally sharp as a tack, but had some physical limitations (actually lives in an Assisted Living facility), ...and, he did all of his shooting from a wheelchair. The father was game to try many different guns. He spent most of his time with revolvers (he was the reason I opted to get a Ruger Single Six on Friday), as he could safely load and shoot them. He tried a number of semi-autos, liked shooting them, but was not physically able to manipulate the slide etc.

We spent a lot more time on the range than I had scheduled, but for a good reason....they were having too much fun!

They both live in Fargo, and are heading off to buy a Ruger GP100 and most likely a S&W model 617. The father had trouble with the very fine skill needed to load etc. with the Single Six.

So, if there is an age that is "too old" (and of course there isn't), I know that it is not 86!

Way too much fun!

Nothing like a good revolver for us older guys.

Anyhow, great story. Yeah, the Ruger Single Six is a fun gun, but something of a pain to load and unload. And us older guys want to spend more time shooting than loading and unloading. After all, we don't know how much time we have left. ;)

While my first handgun was a revolver and I carried a Ruger Security Six for five years, I still prefer semi-automatics.

I too use a semi when it counts but a revolver is a great range/field gun. Nothing against a revolver, I would probably carry one if I could find one that points as well for me as my 1911.

Here, Here :!:

I grew up with revolvers, but when my dad finally let me shoot his old Luger, I was hooked on s-auto pistols. Have long since moved onto the model 1911, and am totally infatuated with Mr. Browning's design. I've even been able to convert a Glockster buddy of mine into the fold!

Ahh, another zealous convert to the one true church of the 1911. :D

I'm a little behind in reading, but what a neat story !

The fact that these elderly gentlemen (and I find that "elderly" is getting to be a relative term these days) were interested in learning to shoot, but that father and son were still doing things together. Good for them ! And good for you for showing them what fun it is.
