Best way to unfreeze a stuck hex head screw?

Postby Bergie on Mon Apr 22, 2019 6:13 pm

I have a Tikka TAC with the stock muzzle brake and plan on swapping out the stock brake to a better one. The hex head screw that holds it on is 100% FROZEN in! (Maybe the prior owner used Locktite?) Best way to unstick it? I tried JB penetrating oil, now may try heating up the brake(?) Any other thoughts? Or anyone have experience with this brake? It's the size of a howitzer brake! Does anyone know if the threads are 5/8x24? Or if the barrel threads are shouldered to accommodate a non-OEM brake?

Kroil for corrosion.
Localized heat (soldering iron tip on bolt head) to soften LocTite

According to the manual - 5/8-24..........
They may have factory applied epoxy like they do the the rails............
All men are created equal....It's what they do from there that matters!.

pencil torch on head.

Select the right tool before you get it hot.

if/ when there's a risk of stripping either the bolt head or the driver, (such as loctite) when you're ready to try to turn the bolt, attempt to break it free by further tightening the bolt. Then, if it strips either the bolt or driver, the bolt/ driver interface might remain viable to drive in the opposite direction to loosen. If the tightening motion broke it loose, it will extract much easier.

Good Luck

DO NOT use a pencil torch! Those things can reach 2400 degrees and that is to hot, it can ruin the finish. Instead follow the advise to use a soldering iron, they are regulated to 700 degrees and are a safer alternative.
Let us know what happens.

Heat is the best way to “unfreeze” stuff
