Stanek is a strong 2A proponent.

Since when?

Yes, he made pro-2A noises, when he was in the MN House. And even went so far as to sponsor the carry bill, in a year when he knew it wasn't going to pass. But when it did pass, and he was serving the governor as Commissioner of Public Safety, he did everything he could to water down the reciprocity provisions, creating the mess we've been dealing with, since.

Then, as Sheriff, he issued permits as the law required, instead of playing games the way Fletcher did over in Ramsey. He certainly deserves some credit for that. But I don't think that doing his job as prescribed by law is enough to be called "a strong 2A proponent."

I've been watching him for 15 years, and he's been consistent in taking that position that he sees will most benefit him, and only to the minimum degree necessary.

He's not been a strident opponent, but he's hardly been much of a supporter.

What I really care about is whether this visit actually swayed any legislator's votes. I can just see a bunch of starstruck legislators jumping onto the anti's bandwagon.

Wondered about that as well. barry gave him props at the intros, but if he was there, he should have been seated here, in the morticians' section:

Does handing guns over to Mexican drug cartels count?

I might give you even money on the Secret Service guys.
But of those seated, I'm not sure you'd find a pulse, given that morose cluster.

Did you really think Obongo could come with something original? Slick Willy probably suggested to him to come to MN because that's what he did and he got his ban.

I was at MSP today and due to a flight delay got to see Kenyan Force 1 arrive and depart. If I were delta airlines i'd send a big bill to the government for all the fuel burnt standing in place for a half hour before arrival and departure...

brauchma wrote:It is driving me absolutely nuts. "weapons of war don't belong on the streets!" "Our officers should be out-gunned out on the street" WHAT?!? with a semiauto modern sporting rifle?

You know, I can actually agree with those two points, within reason. Our officers shouldn't be outgunned on the streets. Agreed. The average citizen should be able to own all the same firearms that LEOs can own and have access to, including SWAT teams, but not beyond. I'm okay with that. There is nothing out there that I can currently go and buy that law enforcement agencies couldn't purchase as well (if they chose), so what's the problem? In fact, it's the other way around. How about a level playing field here? :D

I can also agree with the sentiment that "weapons of war don't belong in the streets," again within reason. I don't think someone should be allowed to fire off a 120mm mortar in the middle of a residential street, or launching rockets from an AT4 along interstate 94. There's a defacto ban on civilian ownership of the vast majority of small arms (not even getting to the bigger stuff) currently used by the military, so again it's a moot point.

But who am I kidding? That's not what he meant by those statements. Our police officers aren't outgunned. We don't have weapons of war. He really means "I want to reduce civilian ownership of firearms as much as possible. I would love an outright ban including confiscation, but I'll take whatever I can get."
