What are the rules for private sale of a handgun in MN?

Postby ABC123 on Sat Sep 09, 2017 7:27 pm

I recently moved to MN and was curious about what the rules are about private sales for buyers and sellers?

thanks in advance

No formal background check necessary. Must be over 21 for a pistol and must not sell to a prohibited person. If you suspect they are, don't sell.

Some folks, out of an abundance of caution, request to see a drivers license and a permit to purchase/carry. Some will even insist on a bill of sale to CYA.

Should be easy enough to Google. Welcome by the way. It is usually a good idea to introduce yourself - because we often get Internet trolls and people who don't share a sincere interest in firearms, good luck with your quest for an answer.

Interesting. Sounds like the seller takes most of the risks. I would want to see permit to purchase/carry just to be safe. Thanks for the heads up.

Not really. The seller is only on the hook if he knows or suspects that the buyer is not eligible to purchase. You can't know what you don't know. What a person who you have no reason to suspect being ineligible does with a gun after you sell it is their issue. Obviously use your best judgement and take whatever precautions you feel are appropriate.

You asked a question that is easily answered with a Google search with a lot less effort than obtaining an account On this forum. You didn't introduce yourself in the introduction area. You could have searched the forum for the answer to your question. Your first posts are on a topic that anti 2A types tend to spend their time on.

You can pick one, but you hit them all.

A B C
[Using the search function,] It's easy as, 1 2 3
As simple as, [typing in "private sale"]
do re mi
A B C, 1 2 3
Baby, you and me girl!

yukonjasper has made good points, and the OP has had opportunity to acknowledge some of those points, but hasn't. ABC123, would you be willing to be less vague and defensive, and please be more transparent about yourself?

You're wrong on all counts, but I appreciate the people who simply helped me get the information I was looking for.
