Wall Display

Postby norm582 on Sun Oct 18, 2009 11:40 am

Looking for some fresh ideas on a wall display for long guns and knives. I recently reinforced a interior wall and wanted to see what kind of ideas you guys, oops and gals, might be able to offer. Thanks!

P.S. I love this website!

I'm a big fan of wooden racks for long guns and pegboard with rubber hooks for pistols and bayonets. Back when I collected folding knives, I kept them in fishing tackle boxes that could be left open on a shelf if you wanted. Then again, putting a rifle on a bipod and setting on top of your entertainment center is always a good way to get conversation moving!

I've been kicking around the idea of building a nice built-in display, myself. Sort of a gun rack in the wall, with doors that slide into the wall pocket-door style so they are hidden when it's open, and they look like part of the wall when it's closed to hide their whereabouts. My thought is to use oak wood lined with felt.

Now that your wall is reinforced it's too late fpr a built-in unless you don't mind more work, but this could also be done on the outside of the wall, maybe with plexiglas doors and a lock.

Make sure you post some pics when its done :)

ETA: As long as we're talking about displaying things, I have an old printers drawer on the wall that holds old fishing lures nicely. I also have a old pocket knife or two in there.

Wooden ammo boxes are my favorite for small items. The knotty cedar backing makes a good wall cover because you can mount anywhere.

You could screw a plexiglass front on the box for the more valuable items...you could even install lights for added effect!

Two vertical 1x4's with dowel pegs for the long guns, with a peg through the trigger guards, and a lockable rod through that set of pegs would slow down a bad guy or kid.
If you are going to walk on thin ice, you might as well dance.

A friend's parents have a setup like that. They have a shelf built into the space under the stairs of a split-level entrance. The shelf looks like it's mounted solidly, but it swings out to reveal a storage area where the long guns were stored. Kick around that idea in your head for a while; it was quite discreet and probably a lot easier than making a pocket door look like part of the wall.
Both my family and the gun-owning grandparents had a "shortened" room in the basement. One of the wood paneled walls was built a few feet from the cinder blocks with wood paneling that swung out.

Thanks Mr.O... What I'm really going for is a nice display that can be locked/secured. If it doubles as hiding place, that's a bonus. Any work required to make something like this would rate a 1 on a scale of 1-10 for me, so I'm not worried about the work. ...Unless we were talking about a custom hidden bookcase with some kind of hydraulic opener and a remote switch, then maybe a 2... lol
