Why carry more than one mag?

Postby mnxd9 on Tue Oct 09, 2007 10:55 am

Just wondering what your reasons are for either just carrying with a loaded mag, versus loaded with a spare/s. Anyone just carry a BUG instead?

Just a little conversation between the wife and I.

I suspect most people do it from the quicker reload incase of a problem, not so much that you "need" another 10-15 rounds, that's just kind of a plus, for say....

Gota friend that says the quickest reload is another gun.

#1 cause of malfunction issues for semi-autos in my experience is mags...I want that quick fix chance, and a tactical reload doesn't mean waiting til you empty 1st mag...I'd rather shoot what i need, and have a fresh full 15.

Plus, if I have to empty my mag to stop a threat, I'd like to recharge and still be armed, just in case, while I wait for law enforcement to arrive.

I think that there are a lot of really good reasons for at least one reload on your person while carrying.

1. There are just some peoblems that cannot be fixed by anything other than another mag and some fast thinking. (AKA the type 3 malfunction or "Double-feed")

2. After a lethal force encounter - you will likely not know how many shots you fired -or if there are going to be more hostilities from either the persont hat you just were forced to shoot - or his buddies that might be lurking off to the peripheral areas. An Executive - Or tactical reload would be more than appropriate.

3. Carrying a reload is a lot easier than carrying another gun - however another gun would be nice sometimes to have - it is a hassle.

4. The likelyhood of being in any situation where you would need a reload is slim - but I always bet on things going WAY wrong - may be a good way to stay alive. If things go wrong - they tend to go way wrong.

because more and more reports of SD shootings involve more than one bad guy.

And because a lot of us still carry moderate capacity firearms. My standard carry is a 1911 commander, with a 8 shot mag, plus a 10 round back up. I just figure if i get in a bad place, knowing I can go to slide lock and still have ten rounds to reload, is a mighty comforting feeling.

Even in crappy weather or bad locations, (dirty and dusty, wet or the like, not just N mpls) When I carry my glock 27, The back up mag is a 17 rounder for a 22.

WHile the odds of me having to fire my weapon even once in SD are pretty slim, the odds that one time might be against multiple opponents has risen and I am prepared to meet that.

Because nobody ever lived through a firefight, then wished that they had less ammo during the fight.

Plus, type 3 malfunctions are rather difficult to clear without another magazine.
It turns out that what you have is less important than what you do with it.

Because you bump your magazine release and the mag from your carry gun drops out and you do not know it, so now you have a single shot unless you have an extra magazine. :)

Because it will quite likely take longer for me to make the assessment that the threat is ended, than it will to empty my gun.

I carry an extra mag and extra gun. Depending on the situation, I will use the bug or primary but having the extra mag is mandatory in my mind for the primary.

Choose your solution and go with it. 8-)

I carry an extra mag (15 rounds) just for peace of mind because you don't know if you'll empty your MAGAZINE (Thanks for pointing out my mistake Pinnacle) in a self defense or double feed situation..

Lots of good points, started this thread for conversations sake, you guys always come up with something more than I thought of.

Generally speaking i don't carry a spare on me, main reason being I don't have a good way to carry one at this point.

How about a weak side pocket carry magazine holder. I have the 2 pictured below and also 2 without the wings. The wings hold the magazine upright and stay in the pocket when you pull the magazine from your pocket. The ones without the wings come out with the magazine and you have to use something like your teeth during an emergency reload to remove the magazine from the holder.

Personally I prefer an extra mag or two over a bug. As others have stated, it is for covering technicals and reloads, as well as I believe that I would rather reload with 10 than try to get a 5 shot bug out of a shock or jock..........besides why downgrade your firepower............38 to back-up a 45 :o .........as well as an empty 1911 makes a hell of a club
