Carry permit instructor certification

Postby timgun on Sat Feb 27, 2010 9:51 am

I'm interested in getting certified as a carry permit instructor. There appears to be several organizations that offer training for the certification. (I hope I don't open a can of worms here) I'm totally lost when it comes to the MN gun politics, rivalries, etc.,but I'd like to know what you gentlemen and ladies think about the associations and organizations.

Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance,

Tim

You sir are throwing a stray cat into the dog kennel. :hide:

Might be interesting, but I prefer not to comment on any training organization, at least not on a public forum and I would think most feel the same.

Dear Cobb,

Sorry about the cat.

I think you just verified my concerns.

I'm curious, if there are "problems" with some/any organization, why hide it? I'd think that the quality of the carry permit instruction improves with better instructors trained by better organizations? That would be good for MN citizens, I think.

All those who send me a PM, thank you. I'll go from there.

Tim

P.S. A response like X is an excellent organization would have sufficed. No "X" exist?

Self Certify and let your own work speak for itself.

There are some great instructors in MN and many of them are members of this forum. Commentary on the quality of Instructor Orgs is bad policy and we have seen what hapopens when this happens.

Too many people find pleasure of dumping on others and this is bad policy - "those in glass houses" applies here.

Some organizations will certify others ......some don't. I have a very limited # certified and do not wish to certify any more. Just too much to concern myself with.

+1 on Pinnacles idea......self certify ...then you are only responsible to yourself. The guidelines and standards put out by the BCA are pretty clear.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do

Pinnacle, ttousi,

Thank you for your replies.

I'm kind of sad to find so much disunity in the gun community, especially in the instructor business. I'm beginning to comprehend that the best way for me to proceed is to avoid all organized institutions.

I wonder if this applies to clubs and forums as well?

Enjoy your weekend,

Tim

I have nothing to do with either the instructor business or the certifying business. But, isn't the disunity pretty much the Readers Digest Condensed version of all of mankind? I can't think of a company, group, church or organization involving two or more people that don't have conflicts.

just to clarify my earlier response..............certifying others to teach permit to carry also brings a responsibility to monitor and ensure that the instructors are meeting my standards. Additionally when an instructor does something that warrants scrutiny the certifying organization also comes under scrutiny.

I don't want to have responsibility for more than a handful of instructors. Some organizations have dozens of instructors........to each his own.

I have trouble understanding how you perceive that as disunity in the community. Could you explain?

Should this be the case, the obvious solution would be for someone (maybe you) to become a certified organization and pull everyone together. I would be more than happy to supply you with an outline of what and how I submitted to the BCA. I shared it with others before and would do it again.

Again, good luck with whatever route you take.

Like the tousi, I welcome all new instructors and organizations. If it helps bring more folks to the shooting community, it is a win-win for everyone.

I have a few (more than a couple, less than a plethora) of instructors that fly under my banner. I also am very selective in whom I certify as I have concerns about the ills of the son becoming the sins of the parent.

Self-certifying is a good option.

I too would offer up my BCA submission to get people started.

There are some instructors and organizations that I think are absolutely top tier; others...not so much. But....in the main, I would have the same feelings regardless of their area of business. Some folks are just plain nice. Others are jerks. It is the human condition.

ttousi,

I did not came here to pick a fight, just to pose a question prior to taking action, and the first response was: do not go there.

I'm amazed that one cannot ask a simple question: which organization would you recommend? The responses to that question and the numerous PMs I've received, in addition to a few years lurking and reading hundreds of posts here and the "other forum" is the basis of my conclusion.

Now, you've got the absolute right to do whatever you wish with your group. More power to you. I like the idea that you prefer quality. Good for you.

As to the leaders of the 'community;" they are there and we will see what happens in the future. From my perspective it does not look like a All Instructors Unite type of a thing, but what do I know.

No, I do not care to be part of that community. I'll do my own thing.

Thank you for your well wishes,

Tim

I for one will not recommend nor bad mouth another Instructor organization especially on an open forum with someone I don't know.

I would give my opinion and honest assessment of an organization in person to a sincere inquiry. Unfortunately that criteria is not met on an open forum. Think what you will about the replies you have received but all I see is good responses.

My hope is that you didn't come here for a fight but to gather information. The only response I see that could be construed as a negative would be cobbs.........but notice the smilie that was attached.

I do believe that you will get quality responses to your questions..........whether they answer what you want is another story.

Again, good luck in your quest :)

phorvic,

My sole idea regarding carry instruction was to get more people carry permit certified. I think that should be a good thing. It may sound arrogant, but I am pretty good with firearms and I have taught several subjects in addition to guns at college level. I love teaching, and I think I know how to teach.

Being selective and going for quality is something to be admired, Mr. Horvic.

I "know" you rather well from your posts over the years, and one day I will take your course since the four so far, taught by MN certified carry permit instructors, have all sucked. No, I cannot name names, it's unconstitutional or something.

All the best,

Tim

Thanks for the note. I agree that getting more people certified as permit holders is a great goal! It is not arrogant to think that you have good teaching skills. Heck, if that were the sole criteria, I then am incredibly arrogant.

That said, I know that in some classes I do I have sucked. I try to be on my game at all times, and in the main I think that is true, but let me tell you I have gone home after some classes (thankfully not many) where I think I had a rough day. Happens to everyone
