Using Dish Soap To Clean Your Guns...?

Postby Paul on Mon May 03, 2010 8:59 am

At work we use this stuff called SLiP 2000 which is a non-toxic, bio degradable, soapy feeling cleaner that you spray on to your handgun in a standard spray bottle. You then rinse your gun off under water and blow dry it off with an air compressor. It seems to work really well, and is a very quick method to do a thorough cleaning of your gun.

Anyway, the SLiP stuff can get fairly expensive depending on what, and how much you order. My question is, how would an all natural dish soap work to accomplish the same thing at home? It's a good degreaser, and would throughly clean the gun. Is there anything that I am missing as far as potential harm to the metal or finish of the gun? Thoughts?

I use dishsoap in the ultra-sonic cleaner. Just make sure to dry and oil your guns thoughly after.

Use DAWN (not Mom Westberg) as it breaks down petroleum products, as well as it is bio-degradable,
recommended and used by USCG for boating............

Excellent, thanks for the replies guys. Especially the "+1", that was particularly useful.

Another positive thing about this, is that my gun will smell springtime fresh, or like mountain rain. :?

Actually what you use is 725 Cleaner/De-greaser. SLIP 2000 is actually a lubricant, and a very good one at that.

I just use non-flammable spray brake parts cleaner on all of my guns. It is pretty much the same as Gun Scrubber and costs way less.

I've had really good luck using the orange citrus degreaser/cleaner from the dollar store. Non-toxic and little smell when using it indoors. it does help to let it work for a few minutes before wiping it off.

I also use non-chlorinated brake or carb cleaner for the heavier powder fouling.

Just put them in the dish washer and call it good.

i routinely use simple green to clean all my guns, works great, is cheap as dirt and only maybe once a year do i need to break out something a little stronger to do a bbl deep scrub, generally a bottle of tranny fluid mixed with some industrial strength ammonia, works great.
I too use some of the cheap fleet farm brake cleaner to give the guns a quick blast out on the range if needed, 97c a can at ff for the NON-CHLORINATED (seriously only get this one) variety

Simple Green is good, but the orange stuff tastes better.
