handgun law puts undue burden on churches

Court of Appeals hears law on how concealed carry law applies to churches. Two churches want a religious exemption.

The state law allowing citizens to carry concealed handguns places an undue burden on churches, former U.S. Attorney David Lillehaug argued today before a three-judge panel of the state Court of Appeals.

The state is appealing a Hennepin County District Court ruling striking down parts of the law. The 2005 law requires the state to issue handguns to citizens who submit applications for them.

Assistant Attorney General Pete Marker said, “There is no religious practice that is rendered unlawful by the personal protection law.”

Lillehaug of the Minneapolis law firm Fredriksen & Byron argued the case on behalf of Edina Community Lutheran Church and Unity Church of St. Paul.

Judges Terri Stoneburner, Jill Flaskamp Holbrooks and David Minge gave no indication of when they would rule on the issue.

Lillehaug said the law violates the state and federal constitutions as well as federal law.

Stoneburner seemed skeptical. She said, “An inconvenience, maybe. But a burden?”

Lillehaug said it’s a burden because it requires churches to post exquisitely detailed signs at every entrance and also ask anyone carrying a gun to leave - as opposed to just being able to ask those with guns to leave.

Church parking lots also are at issue.

Gosh, and I had to buy my handgun. :(

Actually, they don't even NEED to post, all they have to do is ASK someone that is carrying to leave, as I understand the law.

Too bad these folks are so anti-gun that they can't see the forest from the trees. Churches have been targets of murders and robberies for a while now.A sign sure as hell ain't gonna stop a criminal.Image

Pastors are a prime target for nut jobs, I know our security team is armed at our church and there isn't any signs posted. Its one of the largest churches in the metro area. I've never carried at church, never felt the need. I've often wondered what they'ed say if I asked, im sure it would be a no, but I don't plan on asking. Im still new to carrying and will eventually at church, Just gotta figure out my clothing/concealment attire.

Hmmm, I might know a guy who pocket carries a snubby revolver to church every Sunday.... If I know such a guy, and I am not saying for sure, it might be that it works wonderfully without any need of any kind of special clothing! Just drop it in the front pocket and go. Based on his experience, if he even exists, I would say everyone should own at least one snubby revolver.

A lawyer who can't read? Or is he pulling a bushism (blantant, in your face lying*)?

* - Not redundant, it is just that blatant that it needed to be emphasized.

Wonder how they would react if the flock tithed with cartridges. An eye opener for whoever counted the collection basket.

The basket might get heavy pretty quickly.

also ask anyone carrying a gun to leave - as opposed to just being able to ask those with guns to leave.

I wasn't able to parse that. Is it because I am a bit sick and out of it or does that just not make sense?

So let me get this straight.

The churches are being told that have to sign the place with the current requiremtns.

MCPPA require ALL locations to sign.

The churches are told they have to follow the same guidelines as MSPPA.

Where's the disconnect here?

Oh, I see. Separation of Church and State.

So why is the church appealing this to the state then?
