Important: Discussion about North 2nd Saturday Breakfast!

Postby cmj685 on Sat Nov 10, 2007 11:57 am

Partly due to the fact that the north breakfast on the 2nd Saturday has been so well-attended (and loads of fun) we have recently run into some problems at the Perkins in Shoreview/Arden Hills/St Paul (choose the selection you like :) ). This morning we had about 16, as I had made previous reservations for...and they couldn't seat us until about 9:20 or so because they were so packed, and even then it was not a sure thing. It is not the first time we have had some trouble along those lines there. So a couple of us kicked some ideas around but wanted to hear from those of you who enjoy the north breakfast. Many of us love that location (both the Perkins breakfast and the physical location) but:
1) Is it time to think about moving to another place or just put up with the minor annoyances at Perkins?
2) If we were to move, does anyone have a good suggestion of a specific place with some or all of the following characteristics:
--it is reasonably centrally located in the north
--it has a private room that would be open to a group like us (this would be ideal)
--it has good food and good service and reasonable prices
--it could seat up to 20 of us
--it is not incredibly crowded at 9:00 AM on Saturday mornings.

We would consider all suggestions, so give us your opinions on both question 1 and 2 and let's maximize our breakfasts!

Why not approach the manager and ask to have reservations for each time?? It'd be pretty tough for them to turn down 12+ guests every single time. They could reserve the tables early that morning.

I'm sure that Key's on Lexington and Larpenteur would love to have a group of 16 make reservations once a month.....................1682 N Lexington Ave 651-487-3530 Roseville

OR

There is another Perking on Snelling just south of Hwy 36.................

I actually did talk to one of the two managers about it...he came right out and said that we should consider ourselves lucky to get a place there at all. The problem is that...they don't particularly need us, so they don't have to do anything special to accommodate us. If we don't come, they will fill up the same number of tables with parties of 3 and 4 which aren't so much trouble to seat and serve anyway.

The Keys in Roseville is a possibility, depending on where people are coming from. Any other possibilities central north?

Is that Perkins south of 36 still there? I thought is was removed when the remodeled the SuperTarget?

They actually moved it back a block. Nice but busy as there are not many places around that way for breakfast any more.

I think what we're looking for is a small mom and pop hole in the wall eating place that will appreciate the mass business... Wish I knew of one :-)

I understand the manager's point and he's even correct about filling the seats and the unstated ... 5 groups of four would turn over twice while we sat there jawing... But the nonchalant reply "I could fill the seats anyway" just bugs me anyway.

A couple thoughts ... Perhaps a Denny's or Embers or some other second tier restaurant? Perhaps a Cafe in Circle Pines/Blaine or something? It's probably going to take a local to find it but the right place must exist. Something like getting the FN Gopher bar to open for us for breakfast (yeah, not so much North Central, but you get the idea)

Is there a Bar that also has a kitchen and does Saturday Brunch which might be able to accomodate? I'm a bit leary about the headline if something bad happened during our breakfast :"Local Robber gets surprise of his life when he interrupts local Concealed Carry Club eating Breakfast at Joe's Bar" ( I TRIED to work assault rifles and .50 BMG in there but couldn't :-))

Would earlier be better for getting seated? would that suppress turnout?
private or small grou permit classes available
