Looking for an Honest Lawyer

Postby sevenpedaler on Sat Dec 15, 2007 7:04 am

yes, "honest lawyer" may be an oxymoron in some peoples opinion (mine), but as a new cc permit holder I feel I should at least know who I should call in case I do need to pull my gun. As I learned in the ccw training course, dialing "L A W Y E R S " after you are arrested isn't the smartest thing to do.
Basically, my family has a coupld attorneys back home (western ND) that we've known for years hand handle our legal crap with the farm etc. But, I don't have anyone here in MN. I don't don't drink and drive and I'm not into anything "shady", but I would like some info about some GOOD HONEST lawyers who I can call. I'm not sure how this works. Do I need to put down a retainer? Any and all info would be much appreciated.
BTW, 1911's all the way :D

First of all WELCOME. Any attorney you may know and can get a hold of would be better than one who specializes in DGU cases that cannot be found if you are involved in a DGU. Any attorney should know enough to protect your rights until you hire the specialist. If you have an attorney friend or one you know well IMO that would be a good starting place.

Brian Toder is one recommended by Joel R, who runs a sister site, and who has been in the P2C arena for a LONG time.

Our own member Marc Berris, aka mnlitg8r http://www.mngunlawyer.com would be another. These are guys who have been in the trenches fighting this fight for a long time.

I have emailed Berris for cards and questions. Got the cards in the mail the next day. He was very helpful and quick to respond. I asked about the retainer, he pretty much said people don’t keep criminal lawyers on retainer. If you have any questions I emailed him during the week and he was back with an answer with in the hour. He seemed like a great guy, and answered a number of my questions. I have one of his business cards taped to the back of my permit, and he is on speed dial. I also have some at home, with family. There is also some know your right advice on the back of his cards. I don’t have it here but it basically says I do not consent to a search, and if I’m not arrested let me go, and something about a DUI. Of course it is worded better than what I just said.

I wrote the number's of two lawyers on the back of my carry permit, in case one doesn't respond, then I call the other. Hank

Taping the b-card to the back of my permit is a great idea. I don't have an attorney of my own and I think this is a great place to find one. Hopefully, I won't need one. ;)

IF you are looking for OTHER than a criminal defense lawyer, I have the names of a few who I trust. I have worked a fair amount with these people in setting up a trust, real estate, and some church and hockey association stuff etc, and I value these people as capable and effective and honest.

Just let me know.

Also their number on your cell phone speed dial is a good idea.. You call 911, then your lawyer. Also have it handy at home for mom to call if you can't!

Thanks 1980. Actually, you probably don't want an honest lawyer. You want a "junkyard dog". Hank.

Actually I was about to say the same thing. One of my coworkers has been working with a lawyer. He says you want a dirty, rotten, SOB with a mean streak and the willingness to eat their own. Took him 3 tries to find what he wanted.

I'd like to second the recommendation of Marc Berris. He is not only a permit holder, but an active member of the carry community. I have seen him "do the right thing" even when it was clear that he'd be working for no fee. (Don't tell the Bar Association!)

Given the choice, I'll take someone who genuinely cares about the work he does, and Marc fits that bill. His card is at the top of my wallet.

I thought this was the definition of lawyer.
