Inventory...

Postby phorvick on Wed Jan 02, 2008 9:56 am

I assumed that most, if not all, gun owners maintained an inventory (in writing or digital etc) of their firearms. Apparently not.

A neighbor was robbed about 2 weeks ago. He had "several" guns...he says "more than 30 handguns" and "about a dozen long guns." All were stolen.

When the police asked for his inventory list, models, serial number etc., he had to fess up that he had no such list.

The guy is an accountant also....you would think that he would be somewhat anal about that recordkeeping.

Now, having said that...I "think" mine are all inventoried, but I will double check tonight. I generally do not photograph them unless there is something unusual. I mean, a Glock 19 is a GLock 19.... :)

I've never thought of keeping a list separate from the gun safe, never even dawned on me.
Guess I've got another task for the to-do list today.

there is a website called mygunlocker.com that lets you keep a password protected catalog online should anything happen to your house.

in this day of cell camera's there no excuse for not having a quick video scan of your stuff,

just lay it out, point the camera and say what it is, I used the family video camera but a cell witll work too. then the stuff was burned on a DVD and one went into the bank safe box, and one went to the brothers.

I've always maintained an inventory with serial number, photograph, amount paid, and other information that was interesting to me but not necessarily helpful in the event of loss. I keep it in a folder at work, as well as on my computer. Not only will this help you get compensated, but you stand a chance of getting it back when the morons try to pawn the stuff.

I'm sure everyone understands the importance of security, but I'll add that it's relatively cheap (maybe the cost of two good gun safes) to outfit a room in your basement that is relatively fire-proof and secure, especially if it's not really large. FIlled cinderblocks, some diamond-plate for the ceiling, and a sturdy steel door and frame all set onto a concrete floor is pretty effective, and you can do it yourself. It's also easy to get creative and add a few surprises in your construction that will stump anyone who is crazy enough to try to bust though your wall.

I have had one for years just made up using Word, you could do the same with Excel. It has headings of -

Manufacture
Model
Serial #
Caliber
Description & Misc.

I keep an active file on my PC, a back up to a diskette in the file cabinet, and ever so often make a copy and drop it in my safety deposit box.

Most important, in gun safes bolted to the concrete floor in a reinforced room.

I checked out this site and have e-amiled the guy who runs it. I noticed that he was missing .22LR in his list of calibers. He responded very shortly after that and said he would add .22 and asked if there were any other suggestions that I had. He seems to have a good site running. It is definetly worth checking out. Thanks for the info Juggalo.

I've had a simple text file with the manufacturer, model, and serial in it.

I also maintain guns I've sold in there and who they got sold to in case the boys in black ever come knocking.

Occasionally I'll snap a pic of my firearms in case they actually need "proof".

Receipts for purchase are kept in a vertical file, in addition with the manuals (which insurance companies will generally accept for proof of ownership).

My question is why the hell didn't this guy have a safe? For the price of one or two of his firearms, he would have protected his entire collection. Hell, a cheap $250 dial stack-on safe will deter all but the pros who won't be kept from your collection by any gun safe.

I'm not a big proponent of keeping everything unloaded and locked (I have no kids, so there are usually a few loaded guns laying around) but the majority is locked up.

Peace of mind and all that...

Here is what I use. It is called GunSafe and works great. Tons of info you can store and easy to use. It uses Filemaker Pro.

I use an Excel file for all my long gun and handgun purchases to help me keep track of the money I've frittered away on this bizarre infatuation.

I keep a Word document for all my rifle purchases, including a brief narrative for each and photos of the specimens I still have.

Copies of both lists reside on my hard drive and on a flash drive.

And, of course, I have all my receipts for purchases and trade-ins.

NOW: Do I have a last will & testament? No. Do I even have a living will? No.

Looks like I have some work to do ...
