Safe way to do FTF transactions

Postby solidgun on Sat Mar 19, 2011 11:15 am

When I go to FTF transactions,

- I ask a friend to come along in a second car if the value of my firearm is a large amount (this varies on how safe I feel)
- I leave a timed email to be sent out to my family
- I leave a note
- I leave a voice message on my answering machine

I was going to recommend people to edit their original post to note where they are meeting, but this opens up other security issues as anyone can see that post....

A week ago, I had to go into someone's apartment in a shady neighborhood to complete a sale as he said he was unable to leave the apartment and I really wanted the firearm. I took the precautions above and left my phone on with my wife on the other line during the purchase.

If you don't have someone else that you can open up to when it comes to firearms (I know people who got divorced because their spouse was anti-gun) please do not hesitate to leave me a PM saying where you are going to meet and some details....once you safely return, send me another PM saying everything went well.
How can you trust me? I don't know how to prove this to you, but I try to do what I can do to reduce gun related violence. If you can't trust me, then find someone else on the board that has been around long enough.

But please do what you can to stay safe. I know these FTF sales go fairly well most of the time, but I don't want something going terribly wrong which results in someone getting hurt; some idiot politician or soccer mom voicing their concern and bringing on negative media hype.

I have done many transactions with members of this forum, both buying and selling. All or these transactions. Ere with members with a high post count, and I have not once had a problem

More proof that it's all about the post count.

I am more likely to trust people on this forum because it is more local. However, not everyone will do their transactions with members here. The particular shady purchase I mention above, I saw it somewhere else.

fixed that for you

If I didn't at least have a pretty good idea of who I was dealing with, I wouldn't meet in any non-public place. I might not meet at all. If I did know them, or saw they were a member of this forum, with a reasonable history behind them, then a private meeting would be of little concern.

Were I so concerned to undertake all the precautions you list, I would hope better judgement would overrule my lust for a good deal. The key ingredient in most scams is greed on the part of the victim.

I have not purchased off here from anyone other then Thunderjohn. However, I have bought and sold a lot of stuff of craigslist (not guns obviously) I generally tell my wife or at least someone when I do this tell them where I am headed and what time I plan to be back, just a good all around practice for anything. I typically wont do anything of CL at my house, out of safety for my family. Also I try not to go to CL goofball strangers houses if at all possible. But I'm on other forums and if its a well known member I will usually take care of business in my garage. Thats about all, I just try to keep it safe as possible.

Think of post count as money. Some people say money isn't everything; they are typically poor.

I made an exception this time as I really wanted the firearm (no longer in production) and his reason for selling it was that he became recently disabled so he couldn't leave his place. But yes, you are right and my wife was right to get angry with me for going there.

I didn't go there for some common gun.....this was rare piece at a great deal. I had been looking for one for several years now :)

What exactly was the nature of his disablement, and was it apparent to you when you saw him? Were you sure he wasn't "disabled" by a tracking system that was locked around one of his ankles?

And that brings up a REALLY good question: With a FTF transaction, how do you know the gun isn't 'hot"??

Glad it worked out; and not saying I'm above such temptation. But leaving notes and messages might just be titled: " Here's where to find what's left of me"...
Buy your wife something nice, and don't talk about, or openly adorn your new piece for a while and it will be OK...sooner or later

Y'all are paranoid

Been buying, swapping, and selling for more years than I've got fingers and toes. Mostly with complete strangers. Really, how the heck else are you supposed to meet and make new friends like Shippy? Never a problem on either side. Sometimes we meet at public place, sometimes, their place, sometimes my place. I suppose when you read that I've been murdered in an Eden Prairie parking lot, an Edina home, or my house you can remember this post and say to yourself- "Wow, he was reckless and it got him killed" Until then, lighten up girls 8-) .
